Family Robbed During Father's Wake, TJ Callahan's To Help Out

Cover charge from show Saturday night will be donated to the Fleury family.

A Tewksbury family, already reeling from the untimely death of their husband and father, received another jolt when they returned home after his wake Tuesday night.

Their home had been burglarized.

Tewksbury Police are investigating the break-in at 117 Elm St., a home Wayne Fleury had shared with his wife Laura and their children. Wayne, 48, died on Dec. 7, just three weeks after being diagnosed with colon cancer.

The wake, attended by hundreds of mourners, took place Tuesday evening at the Tewksbury Funeral Home on Main Street. Laura Fleury returned home to find her home ransacked and many items of value, both monetary and sentimental, gone.

Items taken included a wallet, a safe, an iPad, an iPod, a camera, an Xbox game system, a Wii game system, personal memorabilia, and a lap top computer. That lap top had belonged to Wayne Fleury and included family photos and music projects that Wayne, a musician and DJ, had been working on.

T.J. Callahan's Pub, owned by Fleury family friend Dawn Callahan, has stepped up to help the family during this difficult time.

The pub will be hosting the bands Dawghouse and Forget The Former on Saturday, Dec. 15, starting at 6 p.m. Forget The Former is referring to it as their "End of the World" concert, alluding to the belief held by some that the Mayans predicted the world would end on Dec. 21, 2012.

Callahan says that 100 percent of the cover charges from the Dec. 16 show would be donated to the Fleury family. Also, there will also be a 50/50 drawing along with raffles, with all proceeds going to the Fleury family. For more information, email petergretchen@gmail.com.

In addition donations made be made to the Wayne P. Memorial Fund c/o
Lowell Five Bank, Tewksbury, Mass. 01876.

Absolutely disgusting. If this story doesn't make you support MA gun laws being loosened (see other Patch discussion), nothing will.

I live in the same area that the Fleury family does. This act of thievery was just about the lowest thing in life that anyone can do. My impression of this horrible act is that it might have been done by someone that knew that all of the items that were stolen they knew that they were in the house. In other words, possibly an inside job. When my daughter passed away many years ago, some low life actually stole items off of her grave site. What kind of person can take advantage of a grieving family and the deceased? No one deserves to be treated like this. The person responsible should rot in hell for doing what they did, I normally do not talk like this, but I am so outraged by this event. God bless the Fleury family, and I hope they get restitution for this awful thing. Kudos to Mavericks for helping out the family. Thank you for your act of goodwill to help the family out!!

This just breaks my heart. Mary I agree 100%, I too live in the neighborhood and strongly believe it was probably a local who took advantage and new exactly what was going on in the household. God bless the Fleury family. I hope they catch the bastards.

That is what a drug addiction will do to a person. They have no subconscious. Legislation needs to realize that this is an epidemic and educate and keep our parents and kids aware of what drugs can do to so many.

I don't know the family, but my heartfelt sorrow goes out to them. Contending with the death and then to be victimized by such lowlife. When my truck was broken into several years ago, someone overheard a kid in line at MB bragging about stealing it and they reported it. The kid went to jail. Had we caught him ourselves, the story ending would have been different. I hope this creep is caught quickly.Kudos to Callahan's for helping out.

I guess you can no longer post a wedding, honeymoon or even a death in the newspaper. Better yet, if you do, leave someone at the house of the person involved.

I am also against birth announcements. When my children were born I vowed not to post to the public. You never know who will knock at your door when you get home from the hospital. It is a sad sad way to live.

I guess it's a good idea to leave a trusted person at the house during wakes and funerals to stand guard. It's sad that people take advantage of these situations. The family is heartbroken enough over the passing of their loved one.

We were talking about this today at work. Hearing this news is very upsetting and a coworker mentioned that when this person is caught they need to be brought to the town center and made to hold a sign that says I stole from a dead man's family and then let the towns people take care of them.

This is why I chose not to buy a home in the town I grew up in...Tewksbury. Drugs and addicts running rampant in Tewksbury and it does not seem that there is an end in sight. Keep building elaborate high schools, shopping centers, etc, but please continue to avoid the problem that everyone knows exists. Be careful Tewksbury...pretty soon you'll be just like Lowell.

Don, you sound pretty ignorant. First off it may not be drug related, rather just low lifes stealing...maybe even ones who live in your town. Secondly, all these towns have drug problems including Burlington, Reading, WIlmington, etc... Whatever little hamlet you live in is not immune.

Joe Bill...if you honestly think this is not about drugs and this crime was perpetrated by scum bags not from Tewksbury, then you sir may also be on drugs. Use your head here and not your heart...I understand you love Tewksbury, i get it, i do too, but facts are facts sir. Read every arrest log that gets posted and roughly 70% of the arrests are drug related. Also, I never said where I lived was perfect, but I did my research and it is a much better fit for me and my family. BTW...Interestingly enough the town I live is called Hamlet! You're the best Joe Bill!

Don all of the latest robberies in Tewksbury were done by people who live in Lowell Tynsborough, etc.. and they came into town to rob our homes. Tewksbury has crime, so doesn't every city and town in America with any kind of population. Enjoy your bubble that you found! To the Fleury family, I am very sorry for all of your misfortune and hardships of late. Keep your heads held high, the good people in town are with you.

During the holiday season the only way we can show what kind of community we are is to give back more than anyone can take. This man volunteered endless hours and did great things in our community. I hope everyone can stop by and make a donation to help this wonderful family. I know my wike and I will be there.

Don, unfortunately, it's not a "Tewksbury" problem. I work with people from all over the country and most of them had a story they heard similar to this. Next time you have a wake to attend, offer to stay at the deceased's home during the services. You'll be surprised at the hang up phone calls you will receive from obituary stalkers who prey on people this way. It is actually very common. Very sad.

Dear "Comment" I don't believe I ever said that this was a problem isolated to Tewksbury. I am merely pointing out that there has been a staggering number of drug related crimes perpetrated in Tewksbury over the last 7 plus years and it does not seem to be slowing down. Have you ever heard of Chris Herren? If not, you should look him up and read his story. It's sad, scary, and inspiring at the same time. Tewksbury needs to have someone like him come in and talk to anyone that will listen. Again...it is not just a Tewksbury problem. I am passionate about this because I love the town and its where I grew up. I feel horribly sad for the Fleury family and I would hate to see something like this happen to someone else.

I'm sorry Don, when you wrote this is why you didn't buy a house in Tewksbury, that you saw this as a Tewksbury-specific problem. I am also familiar with Chris's story. Also, though, please notice that most of these drug addicts are coming in from other towns (the Lowells, Lawrences, etc). I believe the drug related offenses (robberies, etc) are being pushed into the suburbs because of more policing in the cities. I will say I think the Tewksbury PD does a great job, as shown by the news that gets reported regarding the drug dealers/buyers being caught due to surveillance occuring at "active" locations. But because profiling is illegal, you can't pull over every low-riding Honda with tinted out windows.

Don, maybe you should do more research. Chris spoke at TMHS (Tewksbury Memorial High School).
You can bash from the outside or you can fight to make it better from within. We chose the latter. There are many. many, many young people taking up this fight in Tewksbury as well.
If you pay attention to the police blogs, most of those arrests have been at the Caswell and Motel 6 which are close to Lowell and 495. There is a reason. We have issues but we are not running away from them like you apparently did.

To the many who have left comments. This is an awful sad situation that does not just happen in this area, its everywhere. The disgusting people or persons who pray on grieving families like my cousin Waynes are in fact everywhere. It is so sad to think that people would be so cold, but a very sad reality for many. My cousin was a wonderful family man, he would be there for anyone who needed him. He has a wonderful loving family who did not at all deserve this.

Let's all try to get along and hopefully get the message out to make people more aware , then they can take more precautions to prevent awful tragedies such as this.

Chris Herren did speak in Tewksbury: http://tewksbury.patch.com/articles/photos-former-celtic-chris-herren-shoots-straight-about-addiction-at-tmhs#photo-11777927; and they also did an awareness week in October. Wilmington did the same November 28th. Both towns are vigilantly working on Substance Abuse Awareness. It truly is an epidemic...The Chief of Police in Wilmington said it is 90% of the crime in town. Prayers for the family in this article.

Nancy I'm sorry that this happened, but I think to honor Wayne and his family we should do as Wayne would have done and do something nice for the family or maybe drop off a toy for tots or donate to salvation army. Show that we are better than the low life .that did this.My prayers go out to the family mat you find peace.

It used to be a very common thing for scum bags to rob homes during funerals, that's one reason the papers stopped printing address' of the deceased. It still hasen't stopped some though.

I don't think the address in the paper was the reason the house was robbed. In my opinion this was an inside job. The perpetrators I think knew exactly what was in the home and took advantage of fact that the family would be out of the house to get what they wanted. I hope they find the sleaze-balls that did this thing to a family already facing a tragic death.

I would like to thank everyone for their love and support towards my family during this difficult time. Wayen was such an amazing man, husband, father, friend, who was loved by so many. To all of you who came to the wake and waited in line for over an hour to pay respect has touched me more than you will ever know. The fundraisers, donations, and gifts that we have received leave me speechless for words. Love to all of you for doing what you did, even in these tough times. Let's keep Wayne's memory alive with his music and his favorite saying "Good, and you".

With all our love The Fleury Family
