Four Candidates Take Out Nomination Papers For Board of Selectmen

Candidates have until Feb. 19 to return nomination papers with 50 valid signatures.

The first week of the 2013 Tewksbury Municipal Election season has started off with a bang.

Four candidates have already taken out nomination papers in the race for the Board of Selectman and a fifth candidate has expressed his intentions to do so.

Incumbent Todd Johnson, along with potential challengers Robert Rosa, Mary Ellen Fernald and Ken Miano took out nomination papers this week, according to Town Clerk Denise Graffeo.

Fernald is a former member of the Board of Health, having lost her seat on that board last year. For Miano, the President of the Tewksbury Boys Basketball League, this will be his second run at public office. He was defeated in a run for the Board of Selectmen in 2012.

Jim Wentworth, a former member of the Economic Development Committee, has expressed his intent to run for selectman this year but has yet to take out papers.

Johnson will be seeking his third three-year term on the board. Selectwoman Anne Marie Stronach announced in November she would not be seeking re-election.

Other candidates taking out nomination papers during the first week were incumbent Shawsheen Tech School Committee member Pat Meuse, incumbent Board of Health member Christine Kinnon and incumbent Library Board of Trustees member Joseph Frank.

Candidates have until Feb. 19 to return nomination papers with at least 50 valid signatures of registered Tewskbury voters to secure a spot on the April 6 ballot.

I am still in discussions with my family and friends about my intention to run for selectman, i have been living in Tewksbury now for over 12 years, I have seen many good and bad things within the Town. I feel it is time that the younger generation step up and help make Tewksbury an even better place to live. We also need to bring additional fiscal control in order to allow seniors to continue to live in Town, and for new families to move into the Town. Stay tuned, I should have a final decision within the next two weeks. Feel free to contact me. Rob Rosa

I am a senior and I believe that seniors need more representation. With the onset of the Baby Boomers, we are in need of more elderly housing. There is so much land owned by the state, that could be used. We should also learn to curtail our spending until we get the debt under control. Raising taxes is only going to force the middle class to move. It seems the middle class gets the blunt of everything.

This town is overrun with condo complexes. The last think we need is another complex whether for seniors or anyone. I would hate to see more land developed for housing...

And developing the state's land, which gives our community whatever charm it has, would certainly benefit realtors...

I have a motto that has served me well in my almost 40 years on this planet. Don't criticize somebody for a job you are not willing to do yourself. That being said, I am willing to dedicate the next three years of my life to helping Tewksbury become the town I imagined when I moved here 8 years ago. I have pulled my nomination papers and look forward to running a steadfast campaign for Selectman over the next few months in hopes to win not only the townspeople's vote, but more importantly, their trust. I cannot sit idly by and see our community getting taxed higher than most surrounding towns without seeing a sizable return on their investments. I'm on Facebook and am currently working with a webdesigner to develop a comprehensive point of information about myself and my goals as Selectman. Email me if you wish, MenardforTewksbury@gmail.com.
Thanks,
-Rick
