Greene, Tucker and Arcari Named Outstanding Athletes

Dozens are honored at Tewksbury High School's annual athletic awards banquet.

It's not often that you see either , or moving slowly.

On Thursday night, however, all three of these Tewksbury High star athletes were a step behind their usual pace because their arms were full of hardware.

Tucker and Greene shared the 2010-2011 Tewksbury Memorial High School Outstanding Female Athlete Award while Arcari took home the 2010-2011 Charles R. Hazel Outstanding Male Athlete Award at the school's annual athletic awards banquet held at the U.S. Bunting Club in Lowell.

Arcari, Greene and Tucker were three of dozens of athletes honored on a night that also marked the final athletic banquet for long-time soccer and track coach Steve Levine, who will retire at the end of this school year.

Coaches from 14 different male and female sports announced their coaches awards and team most valuable players, and no one came away with more hardware than Greene. A standout athlete in three different sports, Greene received the Coaches Award in both field hockey and indoor track and the co-MVP award in softball.

"She was the engine of our team and the engine of every team she's a part of," said of Greene. "Ally Greene brings so much energy to every thing she does. She's just a fantastic, high energy person and if you've ever
seen her run, she can fly."

Tucker was named the field hockey MVP and received Coaches Awards in both indoor and outdoor track. The Villanova-bound track star earned All-American honors in the 800-meter run and is the school record holder in that event. Girls track coach John Byrnes called Tucker "the best runner in the history of our program.".

"Leanne is a  girl with great athletic ability who is going to have a great career because she's continually perservering under pressure," added field hocky coach Pat Ryser.

Arcari, the Merrimack College bound football and track star, received the Coaches Award in football and the MVP award in indoor track.

"Anthony Arcari is one of the most successfully driven athletes I have ever been associated with," Levine said. "He's one of New England's top sprinters by far. He's one of the most respected runners in the MVC, our school record holder in the 100-meter dash, and God help those people on the football field at Merrimack College if they try to stop him 30 yards into a run."

The coveted Meghan McCarthy "Tewksbury Tough" Coaches Award went to senior Lizzie Marchand, who suffered a broken leg during the soccer season and missed all of the basketball season. Marchand recently returned to competition in time to participate in last week's MIAA Division 2 Track and Field Championship Meet.

"This young lady shares Meghan's thoughts, attitudes and beliefs about self pity," said school committeeman Joe Russell in quoting Meghan's mother, Lee McCarthy, while presenting the award. "Meghan did not believe in self pity. She thought that was for people who had too much time on their hands.  Instead of dreaming of a miracle she believed you learned to make your own miracles. This young lady (Marchand) also believes in making miracles."

Senior football and track star Ryan Vibber also walked away with his arms full, sharing the Theresa Lightfoot Inspiration and Courage award with Nicole Devoe, and winning the team MVP award in football. Vibber also received the Coaches Award in outdoor track.

Senior three-season star Richard Kirby also needed help bringing home all of his awards. Kirby shared the TMHS Kevin Kelly Memorial Sportsmanship Award with Joe Hulme, and captured the Most Valuable Player award for the TMHS boys sping track team. Kirby earned all-conference honors and set a school record in the 400-meter hurdles in outdoor track this spring.

Senior softball pitcher Kayla Benvenuto also made several trips to the podium, collecting the MVP award for the fall cheerleading squad and sharing MVP honors with Greene in softball. Benvenuto capped her night by collecting the Dr. Christine L. McGrath Female Athletic Leadership Award.

The Bob Aylward Male Athletic Leadership Award went to senior hockey star Ryan Doherty, who led the TMHS hockey team to the Division 2 State Championship this past winter. Doherty was named Division 2 Player of The Year in the Merrimack Valley Conference/Dual County League. Doherty was also named MVP of the Tewksbury High golf team.

Tewksbury High's Female Athlete Sportsmanship Award went to senior three-sport star Kim Fairweather. Track star Brian Gugger received the Lawrence McGowan Memorial Scholar Athlete Award. Sarah Reynolds, who ran track and played soccer, eraned the William J DiGregorio Female Scholar Athlete Award.

In addition to sharing the Kevin Kelly Memorial sportsmanship Award with Kirby, senior three-sport star Joe Hulme was named the Most Valuable Player on the boys' basketball team.

Senior football and track star Jerry Etienne received the TMHS Special Award for Outstanding Character. Etienne also received the Coaches Award in spring track.

"This young man would do anything for anybody and cannot do enough for everybody," Levine said of Etinene. "He is a role model of hard work, determination and flawless character."
