How Big Of A Problem Are Drugs/Alcohol At Shawsheen And TMHS?
New national study indicates that drug and alcohol use during the school day is a bigger problem than previously thought.
According to a new study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, roughly 17 percent of American high school students engage in smoking, drinking or doing drugs during the school day.
The study also indicated that approximately 86 percent of students indicated that they knew of classmates who abused drugs or alcohol during the school day.
This was the 17th such study conducted by the NCASA. The group interviewed more than 1,000 studentsm ages 12-17, according to an article appearing on Huffington Post.
Perhaps more disturbing aspects to the survey included roughly 50 percent of the students indicating there was a place on there campus where students reguarly went to do drugs or drink alcohol. And about 44 percent said they knew of a classmate selling drugs, according to the Huffington Post article.
So we pose these questions to Tewksbury Patch readers -- How big of a problem is drug and alcohol use at Tewksbury High and Shawsheen Tech and do you feel enough is being done to combat it?

Anywhere from 5-10 years ago you couldn't go into the girls bathroom near the stairs without coming out with your hair smelling like cigarette smoke whether you saw anyone smoking there or not. I experienced someone with alcohol on their breath at least once. I was a little naive on the drugs beyond tobacco (cause there were a few in school chewers as well) and alcohol, there were a few people though who were likely candidates for doing and dealing drugs back then though.

I think that the drug and alcohol use is probably at the same level it was when these kids parents were in school. Although it does seem that they are starting at acmuch younger age. Add to the mix the fact that both Parents are working, leaves for alot of unsupervised time. I am sure every child can name fellow classmates who drink or use drugs. As parents I don't think we can ever be of the thinkIng, "Oh my child would never do that!" Talk to your children. Take the time to get to know their friends.

I remember when the first signs of drug usage began in the open, in 1971. In school here or there, it was an occasional student. Just a few kids (the original dope heads) mostly in High School. But the seeds were planted and in a couple years a much higher number of kids myself included would be smoking pot in the parking lot and to a lesser extent skipping class and finding a 'spot' to do a joint. Less frequently some of us would drink or do harder drugs when available like speed, barbiturates or a more powerful hallucinogenic. I would say by 1974 the drug culture was firmly established in the town of Tewksbury.

I have no knowledge with regard to substance abuse at either school, but would appreciate it, if in your response you could identify which school you are commenting on, the Tech or Tewksbury High. Thank you.

As bad as you imagine it is, it is ten times worse than that. The programs are not working. There is an epidemic of drug use out there right now. The detox centers are full to overflowing. Everyone needs to be more involved. We have to save these kids.

Years ago it was weed, couple beers maybe. Now, it is heroin and lots of it. Parents have their heads buried so far it is shameful. Wake up before these kids are od'd and gone

I just graduated the Tech last year and I did not once hear of heroin! I would have been shocked if I did.

If they did a drug test of the students at the Tech or TMHS, over half would test positive for weed at either school. Pot smoking is endemic among todays youth. Tewksbury is no exception.

It all comes down to parents with no backbone at all. You can get a drug test at Walgreens. Sometimes the bad kid is Your kid!

I haven't been in TMHS in almost a decade, but it certainly was a problem when I was a student. I remember nearly being in tears when they locked almost every bathroom shut because people were smoking--where was I supposed to go? There were kids in class drinking straight vodka from water bottles and bragging about it, kids spraying all kinds of scents on them (because clearly, we'll never be able to smell the smoke on you under all that)...

The problem starts at the top. I have personally seen teachers, a guidance counselor and a school psychologist out partying to late in the night and using drugs (and not just from TMHS or Shawsheen). If there is no accountability with the administrators and leaders, how can we hold our kids accountable?

Hi Jen, I agree set a good example. But teachers, guiance counselor and psychologists all have one thing in common. They are all adults. I'm not for drug use on any level but we're talking about for the majority people under the age of 18 and in schools.

Take it from someone who just graduated thms this year; it is bad. People smoked it almost every bath room. People smoked weed on campus. People I knew even drank on campus by putting it in water bottles. Janitor interns even smoked cigarettes with one of the janitors. Unfortunately, I still know many kids at that school who bring drugs to school and who do drugs and I'm talking 15 year olds. It's maily weed and alcohol but still it is bad at that school. Hopefully with the new school it won't be as bad.

Some days it's not that bad tho because they did 2 drug searches during the year and nobody got caught but other days it is very bad. The worst it ever was was during the middle of the previouse school year, a freshman in the class I interned for brought cocain to school and was allowed to come back a week later.

i would of been class of 83 but quit in tenth grade cuz i move far away. pot was like an everyday thing on the school bus in jr. high and high school.we would light up about 6-7 joints at once and just keep passing them around then off bus and into jr. high school. the high school had a path back then where lots of people would meet and get high then into school we would go. on late start days for the tech we would meet at a house and get stoned then catch bus to the tech and do what we had to. it was a party where ever u went.south Tewksbury had most of the stoners. . i will never forget those days with Mr Griffin and Mr. T.and AL Stevens who could do nothing to stop any of it. hahaha what a blast we had. rented buses to Salisbury and partied all day then dropped of at the oak-dale mall and walked home. a walk to school ment a stop for a few joints and then school

TMHS graduate, witnessed alcohol, cigarettes, and various types of drugs (weed, pills, coke) being consumed in TMHS during school hours. Nothing new, anyone who acts surprised by this is either naive or intentionally looking the other way, which is exactly how it is gotten away with.

didn't they have the dog in last year...sniffing? moving the students outside when they should have been in class. Maybe they should hire a full time dog for the school year, making the students realize how serious this epidemic is becoming. Obviously, health and wellness isn't sinking in! Pretty scary. I have a child in the HS and I am constantly asking questions, knowing who he's with. Sometimes I like who he's with and other times...I WORRY!
