If you braved the elements and took the T to work this morning, pack up your stuff now: The MBTA will shut down service at 2 p.m. due to severe weather caused by Hurricane Sandy.

According to the T website, the service suspension includes subway, bus and commuter rail service. Ferry service had already been suspended earlier in the day. The Ride remains open but users are "strongly encouraged" to call the contractor for their area to see if service is available.

(Updated at 11:24 a.m.) TOWN OF TEWKSBURY REQUESTS HELP FROM RESIDENTS

The following was a statement released by the Town of Tewksbury:

The Town of Tewksbury is requesting that residents work with their neighbors to clear storm drains in front of their property and along their roadway.

There is a high possibility of Hurricane Sandy hitting the east coast with heavy rains and high winds.  There are over 3,300 storm drains/catchbasins in the Town of Tewksbury.  The DPW has had multiple crews out clearing the storm drains in preparation for the storm.  However, the trees have been dropping the Fall foliage quickly which makes it impossible to clear all drains.

The DPW is asking that residents check the storm drains, rake leaves away from the drain, and to dispose of the leaves and debris away from the street or in brown paper leaf bags.  Please Do not remove the storm grates.

 Thank you for your cooperation

Updated at 12:26 p.m. Library Closing Early

The Tewksbury Public Library has just announced that it will be closing at 2 p.m. today because of the storm.

Updated at 2:58 p.m. Road Closures

Two road closures that we know of this afternoon. A section of Shawsheen Street near the Shawsheen School was closed starting at around 12:45 p.m. due to a fire at 240 Shawsheen St.

Also, we've received a report that a tree came down across East Street, shutting it down near Dascomb Road.

Updated at 3:56 p.m. Power outages increase

Power outages are slowly starting to increase. More than 1,200 National Grid customers lost power just over the border in Andover near the Raytheon Plant.

In Tewksbury, the outages are scattered and they are popping up all over town. Power was lost in the center of town briefly but then came back on.

We're being told that we are in the worst of the storm but that "the worst" could last several more hours.

Updated at 7:04 p.m. Around 2200 without power, Dirlam Circle residents trapped

As of 7 p.m., around 2200 National Grid customers were without power. Most were in the Long Pond/Whipple Road area.

Wires were also reported down in various places around town, including Woburn Street.

The biggest problem  is on Dirlam Circle, where a tree came down across the road, bringing wires with it. The proble is that the Dirlam Circle is flooded and the live wires came down into the water. The road was closed and residents were ordered to stay in their homes until workers were able to get the power shut off completely.

Update Tuesday, 9:30 a.m.

Good morning everyone. We'll be continuing to update here throughout the day.

The latest National Grid figures show that 1,303 customers are still without power. That's roughly 11 percent of the homes and businesses in town.

As you likely know by now, school has been cancelled again for today. However, the Board of Selectmen's meeting is still on for tonight. That meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

Update Tuesday, Oct. 30, 1 p.m.

According to National Grid figures, there are still more than 1,300 customers without power. And those outages are scattered all over town, mostly in small pockets.

Town Manager Richard Montuori said he believes National Grid is aiming to have power restored to everyone by tonight, adding that he felt the DPW response to the storm has been "excellent."

Montouri also confirmed that Trick of Treating is still on for Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Update Tuesday, Oct. 30, 4 p.m.

As of 4 p.m., the number of residents without power has gone UP to 1,567. That's roughly 13 percent of Tewksbury's National Grid customers. This is somewhat expected, however, as National Grid often needs to shut off power to a larger area in order to safely address specific damage.

Also, Superintendent of Schools Dr. John O'Connor explained the reasons he chose to cancel school for Tuesday as opposed to go with a two-hour delay. One big reason was that Dewing School was without power last night and into today. For the complete story on the school cancellation click here.

  • Robin's Yoga announced classes for tonight have been cancelled.

We've got our first power outage of the storm. A small outage, less than 5 customers impacted in North Tewksbury. It's expected to be repaired by 3 p.m.

I want to thank the Patch for this wealth of information and all of the phone numbers listed. I have now stored them away safely in my cell phone in case I need them for an emergency. I have been meaning to do this for some time now, and the patch made it easy for me by showing them all in one place. Again, "Thank you"

Mother: The way it works with National Grid is they restore service to the neighborhood with the largest number of customers first. Maybe frustrating to some, but makes sense. They will get to you. It will be a "warm" night and noone will freeze without heat, so I hope
you have enough chocolate to get through the night! They have been working every minute of this storm and they will not forget youj!

I want to give a big shout out to the Tewksbury DPW - a big tree came down by our house on North Street yesterday and blocked the road - they were there within minutes clearing it away (and providing my kids with some great entertainment watching the cool tree removal vehicle run by a guy who looked like a skinny Santa). I was impressed with the responsiveness and efficiency, and was amazed this morning when I saw that they were back by 7 AM to clean up the debris! Nice work!

Main Street by the Wilmington line still without power since around 2:30 pm yesterday. Per National Grid - no restoration time at this time. Call again in a couple of hours if it's not back on. So helpful...
