Man Seriously Injured When Struck By Car On Salem Road
State Police investigating cause of accident.
State Police are investigating the cause of an accident on Salem Road Tuesday night that left a pedestrian with life-threatening injuries.
The victim, identified only as a 67-year-old man, was walking along Salem Road near the Wilmington town line just before 6:30 p.m. when he was struck by a car driven by a 24-year-old female. According to a Wilmington Police officer at the scene, the driver struck the man, continued about 50 yards and stopped.
The victim sustained a serious head injury and other injuries as a result of the accident and a medflight was requested, according to a Tewksbury Police report. At about 7 p.m., the victim was being transported to the helicopter, which landed at the parking lot of the former Rite Aid on Main Street. He was flown to the Boston Medical Center for treatment.
His condition was not immediately known.
An ambulance was also called to scene to evaluate the female driver but she declined to be taken to a hospital.
The State Police accident reconstruction team was called in to investigate the cause of the accident and a section of Salem Road was shut down for about three hours.
A State Police spokesman from the Andover Barracks declined comment on the accident except to say it was under investigation.

This happened right in front of my driveway. I hope everyone is okay but it did not look nor does it sound good for the pedestrian. The driver looked stunned and traumatized and I hope she is doing well today. I will repeat my suggestion and recommendation from my comment to the other story that if the Town does not have police staffing levels to enforce the 30 mph speed limit, it should remove the sidewalk on Salem Road. Pedestrians should not be encouraged to walk on or cross a road that is essentially a 45 mph road. - at that speed vehicles can simply jump the curb as a truck did just a year or so ago when it took out my neighbor's fence and slammed into a tree. We bought our house several years ago with full knowledge that the road was busy but with the comfort that it was a 30 mph totally residential street flanked by schools at either end. Unfortunately as time has gone on it is merely a speedway for people to get to 93 despite kids waiting for buses and people walking to the train station.

I hope the pedestrian is OK, and also the driver as the witness said she as well was traumatized. I lived in South Tewksbury for many years and was actually stopped by the police for going 32 mph on that road, just 2 miles over the speed limit. I traveled that road to work every day and it's a very windey road but I was always aware it was policed aggresively. Maybe things changed due to reduced staffing levels since I moved. Was the man on the sidewalk? As I recall, the stretch on the Tewksbury/Wilmington line was rather straight. That is a road that pedestrians should not walk or jog on unless they are on the sidewalk. It's too busy. People have to take that road to 93 otherwise Rt 38 would be a parking lot every day. Perhaps better, more visible signage and more police would help.
