Police: Report Of A Black Bear In A Residential Neighborhood
Police issue warning to residents.
Tewksbury Police issued a reverse 911 call Wednesday evening after a black bear was reportedly sighted in the area of Sesame Streetand Doherty Way off Whipple Road.
Officers and Animal Control were unable to locate the bear and confirm its appearance in the residential neighborhood. However, police are warning residents to use caution and not to approach the bear if it emerges from the woods again.
The following is a text of the reverse 911 call made by police:
"This is the Tewksbury Police Department calling regarding the unconfirmed sighting of a black bear in the area of Doherty Way and Sesame St at 9:15 this evening. Residents are advised to bring in pets, take down bird feeders and secure refuse containers.
If you see the bear Do not approach the bear call 911. Call At:
978-851-7373."

I'm in the area and received a phone call, but it was a CodeRED call, not a reverse 911. A friend of mine dead smack in the "hot zone" did not receive a call - they were not signed up for CodeRED yet. Question(s) to anyone who may know: Are we going to fully transition to CodeRED? If not, what justifies using one over the other? If we ARE going to fully transition, I think we need to really push getting people into the CodeRED database, because if they have ever received a reverse 911 call, they will think that they don't need to do anything.
If no one has the answer here, I'll dig a little deeper.

Thanks Sean.... you beat me to the punch .... sounds like we will need to re-run the article again. Folks need to know that this is an "Opt-in" program ..... they wont be getting all the calls automatically if they are not signed up. Now, i'm guessing the reason for this is because so many people are dumping their landlines ... better to opt-in with a cell number.

This raises a question as to whether the notification for the lady robbed at the bank was a reverse 911 or a CodeRed call. I live close enough to the bank that I should have been notified, but was not via reverse 911. Would I have been notified if I was enrolled in the CodeRed system, which I have just done.

I actually saw the Yeti the other day walking down route 38. I have also seen the Loch Ness monster in a nearby pond.

Well, we are enrolled in the Code Red System and we were Not notified. As I stated early on we didn't get a call either from Reverse 911 or Code Red. We did get notified about street closings via code red. Strange, Huh?

I signed up for the code red system a while back. I live in the area where the bear was possibly seen. I received a call on my landline, a call on my cell, and an email.

Toby, same here. My understanding is the CodeRed is a more directed approach where only people in the area affected get the call. Reverse 911 is used for a town wide type of event.
I got a call on home phone, wife's and my cell and an email. I was not alerted to the robbery at the bank because I am on the other side of town.
