POLL: Do You Support Banning Leaf Blowers?

The town of Marblehead will discuss the issue at Town Meeting and other communities are also exploring the idea.

Town Meeting in Marblehead plans to debate whether to ban leaf blowers this year.

The debate has been heated at time and the discussion has spread across Massachusetts.

On one side are those who say leaf blowers are a health risk, which are too noisy and damage a community's quality of life. The other side says banning leaf blowers goes too far and will cripple landscaping businesses.

Neighboring Swampscott is also eyeing a similar ban that may go before Town Meeting next year.

This issue has caused much debate throughout Greater Boston. So, we want to know: What do you think? Would you support the ban of leaf blowers? Take our poll and let us know.

It is not "petty" to object to an ungodly racket that goes on sometimes for hours at a time and makes it impossible to hear yourself think, let alone converse, on a nice screened porch that was built as a summer refuge and is now more like a torture chamber. We have to go inside and close the windows on that side of the house to get any peace. I understand there are quieter blowers now, mandated in some enlightened areas, in place of the shoulder-mounted jet engines our neighbors' contractors use.--And yes, I do use a push mower. Good exercise. And what's the matter with rakes?

I had my lawn removed and replaced with bark nuggets right after I bought the place in 2004 and found out the city was charging me $60 a month to water 600 sf of grass.

You might want to blow those bark nuggets into the street and put down rocks. The states fire marshal wants restrictions on bark mulch.

It's not suprising that Marbleheaders would like to ban these mini power plants. It would be a great chance for landscapers to double or triple their fees.

Foolishness. If you want to ban something then fine, put time restrictions on when they can and can not be used. Say 8:00am to 7:00pm. What ever. This is the type of thing that makes towns like HW, Marblehead and any other well to do town look like snobs and out of touch with the real world.

Move along. Nothing to see here.

What is this "Scenic Roadway"?

Comment_arrow

Sue Carter

1:49 pm on Friday, April 20, 2012

Tony- exactly what did you mean by your comment about scenic road by-laws? The proposed by-laws restricts the removal of trees over 6" or more than 15' of stone walls, much less restrictive than the state law which would govern in the absense of a local by-law. Streets listed as scenic were adopted in past town meetings so it eases the regulations for people living on those streets. It also has emergency provisions and provisions for the removal of nuisance trees. THIS ONLY APPLIES TO WITHIN THE PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY - typically 33' for the older roads on the list.

Comment_arrow

Tony

1:54 pm on Friday, April 20, 2012

Sue: I'm going to say this only once. No more infringements on my property rights, period. I'll be working overtime to see that this bylaw is defeated at Town Meeting. I viiew this as only a petty power grab by the Planning Board. I believe that once Chelmsford residents see this for what it is, it'll go down in flames.

Comment_arrow

Sue Carter

2:23 pm on Friday, April 20, 2012

Tony- it is the public right of way - it does not extend into your property. If you live on one of those roads already designated as scenic, the state law applies and it is more restrictive. Vote however you want - if you don't live on one of those 8 streets, you might want to ask those residents their opinions since it would only effect them.

To answer your question a Scenic Roadway is most any road in Tewksbury that has no sidewalks, numerous potholes, trash, cigarette butts and Bud Light cans decorating the borders of the worn away front laws from drunk and texting Tewksbury drivers who can't stay within the lines. One method to add to the beauty and attraction of a Tewksbury scenic roadway is to put cinder blocks or boulders on the edge of ones lawn. This also provides great entertainment when drunk and texting Tewksbury drivers drift off the road.
Have a great weekend....

Excellent point John. I have no problem with neighbors cleaning or working on their space with power tools. I am all for cleaning and upgrading property. Most people in Lynnfield should invest in a power blower. But I do have a problem with barking dogs and ignorant dog owners using the sidewalks and our front lawns for their dogs to go to the bathroom. Now thats worth banning!!!

I wonder if there will be any accountability of town leaders or if they will simply play the 'we didnt know revenues would dry up' and the spent money like it was going out of production and increased our bloated workforce with stimulus money and when that dried up we had to resort to strong arm tactics rather than cut back like we should oh what a situation. I am thinking about getting out now while I still can get a few bucks for my home and move to a town that has some foresight and isnt just 'one step to the next'

Some people are not fortunate enough to be physically capable of "a little hard work", and so must rely on yard care professionals to do it for them. Time is money to these companies - I'm sure they would be happy to quietly rake a lawn for $500 instead of blowing it clean for maybe $100. I have seen some pretty darn big yards being done by landscapers, and I've never seen or heard a blower being used for more than 30 - 40 minutes at a time... and this is once a week, the normal yard-care interval. Living among people entails tolerating a certain amount of noise, whether it's yard care, kids playing, babies howling, dogs barking, music playing, traffic coming and going, etc.
If listening to a leaf blower for an hour or less, once a week is wrecking ones' tender sensibilities, perhaps it's medication that is needed instead of yet another restrictive by-law.

You know, some people are so lucky that this is all they have to worry about. There is so much noise in the world - you cannot legislate it all. If you want silence, buy 100 acres somewhere and build your house in the middle of it. When you live in a highly populated area like the northeast, you can't have everything your way . . . geesh. What are you talking about? I know conservatives who want to ban many more serious rights then leaf blowers. Marblehead isn't exactly what I'd call a bastion of liberalism. And, when you think about it, more conservative communities like Brookline want control over everything in the town. So stop trying to blame liberals.

10:37 am on Monday, April 23, 2012

Michael: At least you got the "work shoes" right. It's liberals who got you a 40 hour work week and stopped the exploitation of workers not to mention child labor abuse. And this was done in a bi-partison spirit that is far from the reality of today's political scene. But what I was trying to point out was why does it really matter whether you are a liberal or a conservative? It's this type of rhetoric that is dividing us as a country of hard working people who have actually lost ground in the last 30 years. At a time when we should be solving our nation's problems and moving forward together, liberalism vs. conservatism is one of the things that's causing problems, not solving them. There's anger and hatred on both sides toward each other to the point that may eventually lead to a country that none of us want. I hope it will never come to that, but the situation is quite serious when you really think about it. It really doesn't serve any useful purpose to banter among ourselves about who we are liberal or conservative. I think you'd find it interesting to read what a conservative (Mickey Edwards) wrote about a liberal book written by Eric Alterman in yesterday's Boston Globe. It talks about reasoned discussion not name calling.

This has to be a joke. In this day and age of advanced technology do they really want to go back to back-breaking raking when a little wind from a machine makes short work of it? So it makes some noise ... so what? It gets the job done. It is also GREAT for removing snow from my shrubs preventing branch breakage. I'm with Phil Stanway ... they will need to pry my leaf blower from my cold dead hands ... and then pry me away in a body bag before I give up the convenience and efficiency of my leaf blower. I'm too old to fool around with old-fashioned methods that will age me further. So, there!!!!! PS ... Chelmsford is my town.

At least leaf blowers are used during the day light hours. What is worse is living next door to a drummer who practices all night and all day. Nothing can more annoying than hearing drums and cymbals with no music in the background. If there is music, it is heavy metal. It almost sounds like he has it amplified. Not only does this person play his drums at all hours, he leaves his two dogs all the time barking all day and all night. Maybe he is driving his dogs crazy with his banging.

I will admit that this story was amusing at first; however, when I visit my town's Patch, I see a long list of comments about this story in the comment feed. And often I see a commenter from Chelmsford arguing with a commenter from Danvers about a warrant article for Marblehead. I have to scroll down and search long and hard to find comments made by commenters from my town regarding stories about my town. Unfortunately, there is NO way to filter these comments out so that I can see only the comments related to my town.
