Redmen Roundup: Baseball, Softball Teams Continue Strong Starts
Tennis team picks up a key league win over Methuen.
It was no day at the beach -- well, actually it kind of was -- for the Tewksbury High baseball team when it travelled to the island to take on Nantucket in a double-header. The Redmen were all business, sweeping the twin bill, 9-0 and 6-3.
Lefty ace John Chotkowski tossed a 2-hit shutout in the opener. He struck out eight and allowed just one walk. Offense came courtesy of Zack DiRocco and Mike Casey, who each had a pair of hits. But the big blast came from Joe Gonsalves who cracked a home run in a pinch-hitting appearance.
In the second game, DiRocco picked up the win on the hill. He pitched 5.2 innings in a strong start. Cam Oliveira had a pair of hits for the Redmen. Dom Rosado ripped a triple and scored a pair of runs.
The Redmen opened MVC play with a tough 7-1 loss to Andover. Mike Casey doubled and singled in the loss for Redmen, who dropped to 3-2 overall.
Dom Rosado, Alex Hamilton and Cam Oliveira each had a hit for Tewksbury. Allyn Hood came on in relief and pitched well.
Shannon McLaughlin fanned 11 hitters and scattered six hits to lead the Redmen past Lowell, 4-3. Brooke Hardy (RBI) and Missy Cordwell (two RBI) had two hits each to lead the Tewksbury offense. Sammy LaFerriere added an RBI single.
McLaughlin followed up with a brilliant one-hitter to lead the Redmen past Billerica, 8-0. The sophomore struck out six and walked four to pick up her third shutout of the year. Tiffanie Marsh had a big game, driving in two runs with a pair of hits to lead the offense. Cordwell doubled and drove in two runs, also. Tewksbury improved to 4-1 with the win.
Melissa Peters has three goals and an assist but it wasn't enough in a 14-7 loss to Nashoba Regional. Tewksbury (1-3) got two goals from Haley Golini and a strong defensive game from Hayley Sutherland.
Tewksbury rode strong doubles play to a 3-2 win over Methuen. Alyssa Mulno won her match at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 7-5. But it was the doubles teams that brought home the win. Jordyn LeBlanc and Nicole McColgan won their match, 6-4, 6-2, while Natasha Kuegler and Meaghan Keene won their match, 6-1, 7-5. Tewksbury improved to 6-2 overall with the win, 3-2 in the MVC.
