Another example of why we need the South station open. How many do we need before the town realizes it's importance and spends the money to staff it year round all the time. Residents of South Tewksbury and all Tewksbury residents for that matter, get vocal about this before we see station closed signs again. I hope this person is ok. A fast response and quick decision to activate a helicopter may have saved his/her life.

Praying for the victim. Cars really go too fast on that road. They couldn't stop fast enough to miss a pedestrian.

People need to slow down on this road. It is a 30 mph road. Every time I drive it I keep it at 30 and laugh at the upset drivers behind me who want to break the law and put lives in jeopardy by speeding. Remember people there is a reason behind speed limits. Be safe and slow down. Let's all get there alive!.

This happened right in front of my driveway and it was awful. I hope we will learn what happened to the victim because I was up all night praying for him. Just a year or so ago I was in contact with the selectmen's office about speed enforcement on this part of the road and was informed that police staffing levels were so low it was hard to have consistent enforcement. The problem is about 6 years ago the town installed a sidewalk and crosswalk (which is the area where the gentleman was hit) to encourage pedestrian travel but the town has failed to enforce its speed limit. If the town can't enforce the speed limit they should remove the sidewalk. Getting our mail or shoveling the end of our driveway have become incredibly dangerous. I told the then chair of the selectmen I was concerned someone would get hit. Now I don't know the particulars here and I do not want to villify the person driving the car because we saw this person after the incident and he/she appeared to be in shock and traumatized. I hope the town looks at this closely. It is only 5:50 am and I can already hear the cars flying by.

I completely agree with you Amy. I've lived on Salem my whole life and I'm ashamed to admit it but I've actually become almost desensitized to the accidents that happen at the corner of Salem and South. They happen at such a high frequency that it feels like the norm. People blow through that intersection all the time. They need to get it into their heads that Salem Road is not a drag strip, Families live here and there is a k-4 elementary school here as well! People in my neighborhood along with myself have been saying for years that they need to put a fully functional traffic light at that intersection, not the blinking light that is there now. I remember they tried a four way stop sign at the intersection years ago and it caused such a traffic back up they took it out within a week.

I was driving home in that traffic last night not knowing what happend as was able to turn around on Salem and head back to 93. I hope everyone involved makes a full recovery. It makes you remember whats important in life...

Unfortunaley too many of you are focuing on the speed. How do know the driver wasn't going 30mph or less? It's not just the speed, take into account the poor lighting, no sidewalks and pedestains wearing dark clothes at night. I travel slowly on that road for my own saftey let alone others. Then take a bicyle rider or pedestain walking a dog which then forces you the driver into oncoming traffic....

Let's look at all the saftey factors involved not just the road speed...Getting hit by a car at 5mph would be devastating enough let alone 20-30mph.

I went down Salem today and Wilmington PD had a cruiser doing enforcement with a car pulled over by the tracks... Simple fact is that our PD is too busy dealing with degenerate junkies that are breaking into their neighbors homes and fighting at Motel 6 to be able to do more focused traffic enforcement. This town is getting bigger and the Public Safety stays the same or worse. ( Not saying that the PD and FD don't do a good job, because they do remarkably well considering the fiscal constraints) BUt this town is in shambles and the state should have us under receivership. Then everything can get run to the point where it can get returned to the people of Tewksbury. I've lived here since 2007 and have only seen the DPW working on a road 3 times, the water sucks, the roads suck. WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY GOING?!?!?!
