Senior Center To Host Health Fair, Yard Sale

A look at the classes and activities at the Tewksbury Senior Center in the coming weeks.

 

The Silvertones will hold its monthly dance at the Senior Center this Friday, March 15th beginning at 7:00 PM. Tickets are avaialable at the door at $10 per person. Why not come on down and listen to the great big band sounds of our in-house band.

A note of thanks is extended to the following people who helped with the Corned Beef Dinner/Dance: Jim & Marlene DeBay, Tom & Clover Wilson; Lou Canistraro; Mary DeGuisseppe; Shirley Fuller; Allie Casazza; Kay Maher; Ruth Mank, Rose McKenna; Dolores Montecalvo; Arlene Wright; Diane Joy; Bruce Dias; Bill McDevitt; and, Bob Noel. A note of thanks is also extended to Jan Conole for making the delicious home made soda bread; to Laura Web of Fancy Fingers Plus Salon for donating pizelles for dessert; and to the Perfect Match Band for changing their gig to Saturday night. We also cannot forget to mention our “friendly paparazza”, Martha Marshall, who snuck in to take some celebrity shots of our dinner preparations.

On Friday, the day of the storm, the COA staff called the 132 people on the St. Pat's dinner list to notify them of the date change to Saturday, March 9th. Those who had to cancel due to other commitments, and noted so when called by the staff, will be refunded for their ticket cost. Please see Jan or Linda for your refund.

The Mohegan Sun day trip of March 7th was also canceled last week. This trip has been re-scheduled and will be held on Thursday, March 21st. Those who are signed up for this trip but can't make the new date of March 21st should notify Jan or Linda by next Monday, March 18th to get a refund. A count of the number of travelers will be given to the agent on the 19th at which time refunds will no longer be available unless filled by someone on the waiting list noting that at present there is noone on the waiting list.

Tickets are now available for the Foxwood day trip of Monday, April 8. The cost of this trip is $25 per person and includes motorcoach transportation, a casino package and the driver gratuity.

The MS Support Group will hold its monthly meeting next Monday, March 18th at 10:00 AM. This group is open the the public.

Karen Orband, RN, will be back to the Senior Center next Wednesday, March 20th at 10:30 AM for the “Diabetes Academy” hour. All are welcome to attend this informative hour. Ms. Orband is a wonderful lecturer; and, will be at the Center each month to talk about Diabetes. It is well worth your time to come on down for the “Diabetes Academy”.

The Council on Aging will hold its regular monthly meeting next Wednesday, March 20th at 12:30 PM in the conference room. All are welcome to attend.

Then in the evening of March 20th the Red Hat Carnation Belles will hold a Chinese Dinner and Buffalo Bingo Night. Tickets are now available at $10 per person and must be purchased by next Monday, the 18th. Tickets are also available for the Red Hat April Event. More information is available on the bulletin board and from one of the Red Hat workers.

The Seniors and Friends will hold a YARD SALE at the Senior Center on Saturday, March 23rd from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The Yard Sale is held rain or shine. There will be 30 tables of treasures, a bake table, and luncheon specials featuring Chef Nick's corn chowder. Mark your calendars for this big event.

DJ Jon Mansfield will be back to the Senior Center for an afternoon dance on Monday, March 25th. Those who obtain a ticket by March 20th will have lunch included in the $6 tickets price.

Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley will conduct a 6 week seminar at the Tewksbury Senior Center on “Powerful Tools for Caregivers”. This seminar will be held in the evening beginning on Wednesday, March 27th. For more information or to sign up for this free seminar, one may call Edler Services at 978-946-1251. Please note that space is limited. Therefore, it is advised that one register early.

Barbara Antinoro will be instructing a 6 week oil painting class beginning on Thursday, April 18th. There are a few openings left in the class. The 6-week semester fee is $45 per person plus the cost of one's canvas. One may sign up at the Senior Center front desk or call 978-640-4480. This class is limited to 10 participants.

Our AARP Tax Assistance Volunteers are very busy assisting Seniors with their tax returns. At the present time names are only being taken for a waiting list. To place a name on the waiting list, one may drop by the Senior Center or call Jan at 978-640-4482.

The Tewksbury Board of Health and the Council on Aging will hold the Sixth Annual Health Fair at the Senior Center, 175 Chandler Street, on May 1, 2013 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM. The Fair is open to all and will provide health, safety, and preventive educational information. Free admission. There will be Free Diabetes, Hearing, Blood Pressure Screenings, Massages, Lions Eye Mobile, Music, Refreshments, and much more. Lastly, the public is reminded that the Senior Center Upscale Consignment Boutique and the Snooti Patooti Gift Shop are open from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Thursday. The Upscale is also open on Fridays from 9:30 to 11:00 AM. Both shoppes carry some unique items. Why not come on down and browse. All proceeds from the shops support the programs and activities at the Senior Center.
