State and Tewksbury Police Investigating Vicious Assault

Victim suffers serious injuries, taken to Lowell General Hospital.

UPDATED: 9:30 p.m.

Tewksbury Police and State Police are investigating a brutal assault Tuesday afternoon that sent one victim to the hospital with serious injuries.

According to Deputy Police Chief John Voto, officers were called to Compass Lane around 3 p.m. for a report of a man lying unconscious in a driveway. The man sustained significant serious injuries, which Voto said appeared to be as the result of a beating.

The name of the victim and the address police were called to has not yet been released.

Investigators remained on scene for several hours, gathering evidence. During this time the road was closed off to car and pedestrian traffic.

Compass Lane is a small dead end road located off Shawsheen Street.

According to a Tewksbury Fire Department spokesperson, the victim was initially going to be transported by Life Flight due to the severity of his injuries. However, a decision was made to transport him by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital instead. From Lowell General, the victim was flown to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, according to Voto.

As of 9 p.m., no arrests had yet been made in the case but Voto said police were, "closing in on a suspect."

Tewksbury Patch will continue to update you on this story as more information becomes available.

That's correct I heard it over the police scanner but it might have been a silver durango. They said there were two young males one average one large and I believe it was 30 compass lane

Bet you didn't know it is illegal to discuss anything publicly, or with anyone else, that you hear on a scanner. Check your manual. (At least, this used to be the case.) We should be getting this info from the PD, though, so we can be alert to our surroundings and report anything that may be relevant.

I can't help it. What's bothering me about this is that they thought about flying him right out of here to Boston, but then decided to transport to Lowell, and then from Lowell he was flown to Boston. I can't help but think, "time wasted"!

Meanwhile, what the heck is in the water in this town these days! Things are getting terribly dangerous! Makes me wish we could set up check-points at every road leading from a bordering town. . . . or, at least, Lowell. I can wish. Don't let this crap happen to our town!

I hope the victim is OK.

Also, I find it distressing when someone uses a news story to reinforce their prejudices. There is no need or basis in fact to attack the city of Lowell for this incident. A similar attack several months ago led to the arrest of a Tewksbury resident. I would encourage everyone to respond to the facts of the event and keep their prejudices to themselves.

Unless you are a Lawyer, I think you should learn more about the law or our Constitution. It is not illegal to own a police scanner and talk about any situation that is transmitted over the public airway. The damn news media use it all the time.
The problem in today's world is that most people have no concern or compassion for the safety, welfare or privacy of others. It only hinders on the police investigation to catch the person or persons who commit the crime.

I just wanna ditto Ray. That's a heck of stance Janellen27. It is a public service on public airwaves. If they want to encrypt or go private cell phone so be it. There are many instances where members of the public find out of possible criminal activity in their immediate vicinity via the scanner and, even help identify and inform the police.

I reside in this exact area....why were there NO reverse 911 calls sent out for the residents safety? I had seen the officers that were in the neighborhood, but had no idea the situation was so serious, no information was given to residents.....especially since the suspect who beat this young man is still out on the loose! The time of the crime had occurred the same time our neighborhood children were coming home from school. These children had to walk home from the bus stop while the situation was active. Would have expected a reverse 911 call to inform us of a crime that happened in the neighborhood....that is why our reverse 911 technology exists, please use it!

It doesn't matter if you live in Tewksbury, Lowell or Andover. Crime happens. It would seem that break-ins (cars and homes) are on the uprise here in Tewksbury. No surprise with the state of our economy, lack of jobs . We need to be more aware of what is happening around us. No more never locking your car or house. We need to be more aware. I love the fact that my neighbors watch over our house, just as I do theirs. The more aware we are, the more information we can provide the police, should we need to call them.

Because we have spineless judges. We need elected judges enough of life time appointments

Dodie, just watched the FOX25 link. Sad. Pills found scattered in the driveway. Again, it doesn't matter where you live.

Its not illegal to discuss whats said over the police scanner if the cops dont want people to know information over it like someones name, they just call each other on their cell phones instead. its a public airwave if it was illegal, they wouldnt make them anymore.

Listening to the scanner constantly going off from this town's crime problem should be a big concern all of us. Up 30+% (crime) in the last 3 years. Just get the Town Crier and see the 12+ arrests every week. More than a lot of bigger cities. PD/FD always going to the State Hospital, Caswell, Motel 6 and Walmart for problems. Doing a great job I might add. Living in South Tewksbury and seeing most of this happening in the northern part of the town is a little suprising. And no it's not all Lowell types coming down and committing these crime. Tewksbury's new nick name should be "The Bury". Lock those doors and good luck!!!

Seems to me someone on that road is selling drugs or its a popular transfer spot. I think the guy that ran there knew the street well and it was known he was trying to buy or had bought drugs.
