UPDATED: Tewksbury Police Cruiser Involved in Intersection Crash

Driver of second vehicle injured; accident remains under investigation.

UPDATED Sunday, 5:45 p.m.

A Tewksbury Police officer was involved in a two-car crash near the Trahan School Friday morning.

The accident took place at 11:09 a.m. at the intersection of South and Salem streets, a notoriously dangerous intersection in South Tewksbury.

The name of the police officer involved and the other driver were not released and Deputy Police Chief John Voto said the accident remains under investigation. The driver of the second vehicle was transported by ambulance to Saints Medical Center with undisclosed injuries.

According to the police report, the cruiser was responding to a call at the time of the accident.

There was signficant front-end damage to the cruiser. The second vehicle, a dark, late-model sedan, also sustained substantial damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene and the the accident scene was cleared for traffic within 20 minutes.

It was the second accident in as many days at the South/Salem intersection.

I agree, Mike. This is a bad intersection, has been forever. Especially when the Elks is busy. It is has a blind corner as you come out of South, you cannot see cars coming from Wilmington unless you pull way out. I'd say it's time for lights!

From what I saw, the cruiser had his lights on. However, there was no way that car could have seen him coming through that intersection.. Maybe the warning signals that the fire dept uses at intersections could be used for police as well...

What is the Town waiting for? Someone to get killed before they do something

People just need to be very careful until something gets done. I propose more warning signs.

Isn't there already a flashing yellow/red there already? Maybe they should switch who's red and who's yellow. The people on Salem Rd. should stop, with the people on South St. having the yellow to proceed.

I agree with Melissa on this one. That would make the most sense as I've seen the traffic on Salem St in both directions barrelling through the intersection. If Traveling North on Salem there is a posted speed of 30mph, Yellow diamond shaped sign indicating dangerous intersection ahead, a cross walk and yellow flashing lights you would think that this would be ample warning. I think by proposing this change it slow these speeders down thereby cutting down the violators who blow past the yellow flashing school signs by the Trahan.

Four way stop? I wonder if the police cruiser had it's sirens on as well as lights. I don't know why they sometimes seem to do that but it's unnerving.

They tried, for a short while, a four way stop there a bunch of years ago. People driving down Salem Road blew right through them. The biggest problem there is people not coming to a complete stop on South Street. They roll right through the stop sign especially if they come down South from the fire station and take a right onto Salem. A traffic light is not going to correct that problem.

Sarah to answer your question, sometimes the police are responding to certain calls such as silent hold up alarms where they dont want the bad guys to know that they are coming.

Hey George, A Real traffic light WILL solve the problem. The little yellow and red flashing light they have there now is a joke. It is not in the line of site and does not control traffic the same way a Real Red, Yellow and Green light does. The Real light in front of the fire station seems to work just fine. There was just another accident at the intersection yesterday when a Prius blew through the stop and slammed into a Land Rover.

Speaking of traffic lights, any news on when the light is going in at the East St/Livingston intersection? That intersection is impossible, especially when sports teams are using the fields.

The funds for a light at the intersection at East and Livingston streets have been approved by the the Northern Middlesex Council of Governments (NMCOG)/ Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for fiscal year 2011. The MPO is overseen by the Department of Transportation (DOT). I will inquire at the next MPO meeting when the actual work will begin.

I avoid the East/Livingston whenever possible even it adds on to my commute. Another intersection in question: Fiske St and 133 near the Dewing School/Church? I've been noticing a lot of traffic with small school buses/vanes coming from Fiske St to go along with the mad rush of school buses/parents trying to drop the kids at the Dewing. Any thoughts about the Fiske St. traffic? Maybe a detour in the mornings during the school year?

Yes I am familiar with that situation. I will pass this along to the appropriate people to see if they have any corrective suggestions.

I grew up just over the line in Wilmington. It has always been flashing yellow for Salem/ Flashing red and stop signs for South. Should be a full Red/ Yellow/ Green lights there. My mom was involved in an accident there a few years back. Youn kid (17 or 17) went through stop sign - hit my mom's car, spun her vehicle around, and she got hit by him a 2nd time and then her car went into the bushes. Completely totalled her Monte Carlo. Maybe now that a police officer was involved in an accident someone will recommend and put up lights.

wouldn't it be great if there could be a "trap" there to catch people blowing the stop sign? $$ generator.

This intersection has been an issue for over 30 years. Look at the house that is on the left hand side when coming from rte 38. Those boulders aren't there for landscaping they are to protect the house. I grew up 1/4 mile from there and in the summers when I would sleep with the window open all you would hear is screaching tires and often followed by a crash. Full blown traffic lights are the ONLY solution. Teh 4 way stop was a joke. There were about a dozen crashes in 2 days before they removed the stop sighns on Salem Road.
