Tewksbury's Unemployment Rate Dips Lower in November

State's jobless rate down slightly.

The unemployment rate for residents of Tewksbury continued to decline, dropping to 5.5 percent for the month of November.

That figure, provided by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, is down from 5.7 percent in October and down from 5.8 percent in November 2011.

A total of 907 Tewksbury residents eligible to work filed unemployment claims or received unemployment benefits in November.

Statewide, the November seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate was 6.1 percent, down 0.1 of a percentage point.  Over the year, the statewide unadjusted rate was down 0.3 of a percentage point from the November 2011 unadjusted rate of 6.4 percent.

I wonder if that's because people who are out of work have stopped looking for work?
I know at least 3 professional men who cannot find jobs in their respective fields. And their unemployment has run out. In my opinion, the numbers do not tell the real story.

The unemployment number has never been a real number. It is a decent indicator of direction but one month does not a trend make.

That said, Tewksbury's unemployment number is well below state average and MUCH lower than the national average. A good sign for the town.

Not true!! Unless you are unemployed you do not know how much time is spent looking and applying for jobs and in most cases you don't even get a call for an interview! People don't stop looking they stop feeling good about themselves!! EXACTLY your opinion!!

Hard for the 'kids' to get the jobs when there are so many adults looking for similar jobs...Keep trying.

Dirk Anderson said "The unemployment number has never been a real number. It is a decent indicator of direction ..."

I would go further; it is a nearly meaningless number at a time like this where there are so many people who fall into categories that the rate doesn't include; most especially the huge pool of discouraged workers who flood into the market when there is good news, hoping to find something, and drop out again when the news is bad. Thus the official rate not only masks the true magnitude of the problem, by as much as a factor of three, it also often moves in the opposite direction from the changes in the true number of unemployed and involuntary part time workers.

Well dirk I live in Tewksbury and you say our unemployment rate is low so that is good for the town?
Well how I know a very lot of people hell my whole neighborhood as well who live in Tewksbury but not a 1 of them have a job in town none of them ever had this town does not really have any (jobs) to support the kind of income needed to live here the considered poverty income in Tewksbury is 80k per year with a two income family hell low income housing ha ya ok 1300 a month nothing included who's low income is that
Maybe I am just venting after looking for a job since thanksgiving without even a call back and I am a professional who has has a job steadily for 16 years been out sick 5 of those 15 years and am at the top of my field and yet two applications a day have yielded not one interview in my field even for way less pay and a lesser of a job too

Well. If your writing on your résumé is like the writing in this post I can see why you are not getting a call back.

My situation is that I have exhausted unemployment and can not find a decent job. So I am not on unemployment, I do not think I am incuded in their numbers. I think I am one of the forgotten and not included in the unemployed in Tewksbury.
