PHOTOS: Tewksbury Seniors, Juniors Advance To State Little League Finals
State tourneys begin Sunday at LeLacheur Field in Lowell.
Call it a double-play.
The Tewksbury Little League Senior and Junior All-Stars both earned Sectional Championships with victories Wednesday to advance to the upcoming State Tournaments, starting Sunday at Lowell's LeLacheur Park.
The Senior All-Stars (ages 15-16), knocked off North Reading, 14-4, at Obdens Field. The game was halted after six innings by the 10-run mercy rule.
The Tewksbury Seniors have been playing in memory of their coach, Ed Sullivan, who passed away just prior to the start of the Sectional Tournament. The players were each given new caps with the initials E.S. embroidered on the back before the start of Wednesday's game.
Connor Sullivan paced the Tewksbury offense with two hits, including a double, two runs scored and four stolen bases. Doug Sheehan broke the game open with a pinch-hit three-run home run.
John Cave reached based three times on walks. He also stole four bases and scored a pair of runs. Joe Gershman chipped in with a pair of RBI.
Joe Mason picked up the win in relief of starter Jason Walden. Mason tossed 3.1 innings of shutout baseball, striking out four along the way.
The Tewksbury Seniors will take on either Auburn or Seekonk (playing July 19) in a best-of-three series for the State Championship starting Sunday at 2 p.m. at LeLacheur Field.
Tewksbury Juniors Swamp Canton, 10-1
The Tewksbury Juniors (13-14 year olds) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back in a 10-1 rout of Canton.
Chad Oliveira picked up the win on the hill for Tewksbury, with Steve Rosa mopping up over the last two innings in solid relief.
Tyler Johnson, Brett Morris, Jeff Anderson had two hits each to pace a balanced Tewksbury attack. Rosa chipped in with a two-run single.
The Tewksbury Juniors will open the best-of-three State Championship series on Sunday at 11 a.m. at LeLacheur Park.
