Tewksbury Teen Aims for Talent Title
Mikayla Dolan takes her talent to the Stoneham Star Talent Competition.
For 13-year-old Tewksbury resident Mikayla Dolan singing has become much more than just a pastime.
On Tuesday, June 7, Makayla will be taking bringing her skills to the main stage of The Stoneham Theatre where she will complete in the “Stoneham Star Talent Competition.”
With three years of musical theatre experience and a comfort level on stage that would impress even the most seasoned songstress, Mikayla is confident that she can bring the grand prize title home to Tewksbury with her.
Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Stoneham, the event will feature first, second and third place prizes awarded by a panel of three judges and based on talent, skill and enthusiasm.
In addition, there will be an Audience Award up for grabs with “$1.00 votes” available for purchase. Proceeds from the voting will directly benefit the Rotary Club of Stoneham and its mission.
Having already completed tryouts and been named one of 15 finalists in the competition, Mikayla has chosen to perform the song, “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” from the musical Annie and plans to add a little tap to her performance.
Of course, Makayla’s talent for song dates back to long before she entered the theatre world.
“She always enjoyed singing,” explained her Mom, Kim Dolan. "And I noticed that she could follow and carry a tune when she was very young.”
“I was always singing in the car,” Mikayla added. “And my mom noticed that I was pretty good.”
So, where exactly did all of Mikayla’s musical talent come from?
“Certainly not from me or my husband,” Dolan joked. “We sure aren’t talented.”
“My sisters did musicals in high school and my Dad always played instruments,” Dolan went on, “so maybe that’s where she gets it.”
Completely at ease onstage, Mikayla has completely left any hints of stage fright behind her.
“I used to get nervous onstage, but I got over it fast," she said.
Even Mom has gotten over her anxiety.
“I get more nervous about getting her there on time and preparing,” explained Dolan. “Once Mikayla is onstage I know she will do just fine.”
What does the future hold for one of Tewksbury’s most talented young ladies? “Someday, I want to sing at The Grand Ole Opry," she said.
If you would like to support Mikayla tickets for the event are available at Stoneham TV, 53 Central St., Stoneham. Prices are $5 for children, students and seniors and $10 for adults. Doors open at the Stoneham Theatre on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. and the performance begins promptly at 7 p.m.
