The Top 5 News Makers For the Week of Feb. 7-13

Education and bridges grab the spotlight.

Here are the 5 top news makers for the week of Feb. 7-13.

5. Whipple Road Bridge -- A bridge makes the list for the first time. But Whipple Road is no ordinary bridge. It's located on a key artery and has been closed for almost a year. The bad news is, it won't reopen for another year.

4. State Sen. Barry Finegold, state Rep. Jim Miceli and state Rep. Paul Adams -- The trio briefed the Board of Selectmen on the status with the state budget of prospective state aid. They pulled no punches, calling Gov. Deval Patrick's plan, "overly optimistic."

3. Superintendent of Schools Dr. John O'Connor -- O'Connor began outlining his plans for cutting $1M from the School Department budget, broaching the possibility of higher activity fees, along with limited teacher layoffs.

2. 31 Tewksbury students: All these students did was achieve perfect scores on the brutally tough MCAS exams. They earned well deserved honors from the school committee.

1. Ally Greene: The Tewksbury High sprinter proved there is no Tewksbury Patch jinx. She was named Athlete of the Week and followed it up by winning the MVC 55-meter dash title.
