Town Clerk To Propose Adding Two New Polling Locations

Proposal will be presented to Selectmen Tuesday night.

Town Clerk Denise Graffeo is proposing adding two new polling locations in time for the March 6 Presidential Primary.

Presently, the Senior Center and the Tewksbury Public Library each host voting for residents of two wards (four precincts). This has created problems with slow lines to vote and a shortage of parking, especially during presidential elections, when voter turnout is especially high.

At Tuesday night's Board of Selectmen's meeting, Graffeo will recommenda adding polling locations at the Recreation Center on Livingson Street, as well as the Lowell Assembly of God Church at 965 Andover St.

Graffeo's proposal is as follows:

Senior Center -- Precincts 1 and 1A

Public Library -- Precincts 4 and 4A

Assembly of God Church --Precincts 3 and 3A

Recreation Center -- Precincts 2 and 2A

The Board of Selectmen's meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and Graffeo's presentation is the first item on the agenda.

The complete BOS agenda is attached in a PDF document.

I would have thought our new High School would be the best location. I'm sure it was designed to accomodate high traffic and parking requirements. Perhaps then we would not need more than the 2 locations. Seems like an unnecessary expense to run 4 polling locations.

Glad to hear it. At least the New town clerk has some ideas that relate to running a smooth voting experience, than the last one...

For weekday voting, that would legally allow sex offenders to enter a school district. There has been some uproar in other communities over the years regarding that particular situation.

Schools are definitely not the right venue for voting.

Jonathan, you bring up a good point. But Malcolm, don't write off the high school as a possible location once it opens in the fall. This proposed alignment will be put into effect this spring. The solution some towns have come up with, relative to sex offenders, and/or just disrupting school, is to coincide election day with a professional development day and give the kids the day off from school.
