Town Common Gets Spruced Up

Wal-Mart, which plans to expand its Tewksbury store, donated 20 banners that have been installed around the Town Common

Tewksbury Town Common, already a source of pride for the community, got a bit of a facelift this week, with the installation of 20 decorative banners.

The banners, which feature the Town Seal on a red clay background, are a donation from Wal-Mart Corp. The retail giant is planning an expansion of its Tewksbury store and included the pledge to donate the banners in the plans filed with the Planning Board.

"I think it shows some community spirit," said Planning Board member Nancy Reed, who suggested the banners when Wal-Mart officials asked the board for ideas on a suitable donation. "It gives a little sense of identity and really highlights the common."

Workers from Metro Sign and Awning of Tewksbury spent several hours on Aug. 12 installing the banners on light posts around the common and Town Hall.

Wal-Mart has not yet announced when work on the expansion project (which will turn the store into a Super Wal-Mart) will begin.
