West Nile Virus Found Again In Tewksbury

Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project to conduct mosquito spraying on Tuesday, July 31.

(Editor's note: The following onformation was supplied by Timothy D. Deschamps, Executive Director Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project)

Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus were confirmed July 26 in a surveillance trap set by Central Mass. Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) off Shawseen St. on July 19. We are currently working with the Tewksbury Board of Health, spraying in the area below will be done July 31, 2012.

It's the second straight year the West Nile Virus has been found in Tewksbury.

It’s important to note that spraying can only reduce but not eliminate the threat of mosquito-borne illness in the areas that are sprayed. That’s why it’s important for individuals to continue to take personal precautions against mosquito bites — both before and after any spraying is conducted.

NOTE: ADDITIONAL AREAS NOT LISTED ABOVE MAY BE SCHEDULED BY REQUEST OF RESIDENTS.

Avoid Mosquito Bites

  • Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours - The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning. Otherwise, take extra care to use repellent and protective clothing.
  • Clothing Can Help reduce mosquito bites. Although it may be difficult to do when it’s hot, wearing long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors will help keep mosquitoes away from your skin.
  • Apply Insect Repellent when you go outdoors. Use a repellent with DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide), permethrin, picaridin (KBR 3023), IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus [p-methane 3, 8-diol (PMD)] according to the instructions on the product label.  DEET products should not be used on infants under two months of age and should be used in concentrations of 30% or less on older children.  Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age.  Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

Mosquito-Proof Your Home

  • Drain Standing Water - Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by either draining or getting rid of items that hold water. Check rain gutters and drains. Empty any unused flowerpots and wading pools, and change water in birdbaths frequently.  Contact 508.929.1300 if you have found an abandoned pool in your neighborhood.
  • Install or Repair Screens - Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.

You would want to get in touch with the Tewksbury Health Department. The director is Lou Anne Clement.

you can make an additional appointment by contacting the Central Mass. Mosquito Control Program. We've done it several years in a row. You fill out the request on their web site.

Thanks so much Melissa. I went to their site and made the call. They told me they would spray the area around my restaurant this week. Nice job at getting the word out!

if anyone has a sign on their property that says "no pesticides" they wont spray within 300 feet of that property.....so if your neighbor has a sign, then your out of luck within 300 feet.

I was just informed that tonight they will spray the designated area only. If anyone wants to add their street, they can call 508.393.3055 before 3:30pm tomorrow and their streeet can be added. Chances are the spraying for additional streets won't be done until Monday.

Why not just an aerial spraying of the whole town?

The spray kills all insects, beneficials or not. If you have a garden then the spray would be quite harmful in terms of pollination. There are also always health risks in any types of pesticide spraying.

I'll take the health risks associated with spraying over getting EEE. :)

It rained last night, so I assume they are rescheduling this application. I have annually had CMMCP come spray our yard for the last 4 years. Considering this threat (however minor), I am making a request again for this year.

I want to keep this conversation going because of its importance to our health.

First, it did rain all night last week when they were supposed to spray, so I don't believe they did spray at all.

Secondly, I left two messages in two different places to have my street sprayed and then followed my gut and called to see if I got on the list either time; I didn't! Hopefully, this coming week--Monday and/or Tuesday--they will spray.

Thirdly, I am surprised that Tewksbury has NOT been includedin the list of towns that have found West Nile Virus in local mosquitos, according to the television news !

Fourth, when I spoke with the mosquito spraying person he was surprised that they had received "an awful lot of calls from Tewksbury"! Well, yes! Because we have infected mosquitos! Why don't they know that, either?

NOTE: This is NOT the most recent thread on the topic of Mosquito Spraying. Daniel posted one on August 6th, where this one leaves off, so please do a search for that article if you're following this topic.
