Where Is Tewksbury's Newest Dunkin' Donuts?

The 9th Tewksbury franchise opened this week.

The item on the agenda at the Dec. 20 Board of Selectmen's meeting caught a few folks off guard.

A new Dunkin' Donuts? Really?

Yes. A common victualler license was granted to a franchisee opening a Dunkin' Dunkin' Donuts, complete with drive-thru window, at the Petroil gas station/mini-mart at 1992 Main St.

It's the 9th Dunkin' Donuts location in Tewksbury, a town of less than 30,000 people.

If the address sounds sort of familiar, it should. There is an _existing Dunkin' Donuts about 200 yards away at 1973 Main St._

Of course, these two are not the Dunkin' Donuts locations closest to each other in Tewksbury. That honor would go to the _locations at 1699 Shawsheen St_. and _1700 Shawsheen St._ -- right across the street from each other.

The motivation for placing franchises that close to each other seems to be ease for drivers. Commuters find it difficult (and are often unwilling) to try to take a left turn in heavy traffic just to get a cup o' joe in the morning. Therefore, franchise locations on opposite sides of the street find they are not necessarily competing for the same customers.

The only problem with the new "DD" is its proximity to the most dangerous intersection in Tewksbury - Main and Shawsheen.

The 1973 Main St location is pretty busy. Some weekends the drive thru can almost be out onto Rt 38. That location is too close to the traffic light as it is and the new location at 1992 is even closer. I see both sides of it of the argument though. Just not sure if this was the best decision for this intersection. Personally when I'm not in the mood to deal with crossing traffic and taking left in and out of the 1973 location, I just go over to Perfecto's for a coffee. They have more flavors then Dunkin anyway. :-)

It might help if the existing DD would change the side entrance from Shawsheen st to an Exit with a right turn only. At least you could get out of there and the only thing that enterance does is fowl up traffic beside the pick up window and incoming traffic from main st....

Why do we need another in town ? As if the first 8 were not enough !! Why don't they find something useful the town could use ? Especially with all the commercial properties vacant around town .
