Hi Hollie,
I am a waitress and I thank you for your comment above. If we do something wrong, then tell us. If you feel like we are not doing something right, then tell us. Sometimes we need a reality check too. And you are right we work hard for our tips. It would be nice if everyone tipped at least 20%. Thank you

I think you should get your 20% everytime. Most people don't realize how lowly you get paid to be a waitress!

Hi Hollie,

I can't stand this lady at work. She always throws her "status" around. She is dating the owner. It drives me nuts. She sux at her job, and takes all of our credit when the boss gives a compliment. I just caught her paining her toenails in her office when I walked by! Can you believe it? Me and the 7 other people in here are sick of it. What should we do?

Hi Micheele,
Eww, toenails at work is gross, not to mention rude. Obviously she had nothing better to do. I would have stuck my head in and said OMG! I didn't know we were getting pedicures at work today? People are very ignorant. I think your group of co-workers should collectively go to your boss and tell him how you feel. Don't go in as a lynch mob though, be polite. Have some facts ready to be pointed out to him. If you out her as the bad guy right away, he may take offence. Say something like "Thank you for commenting Sue on her job on the XYZ project, but how about Tim for coming up with the XYZ plan? Great teamwork huh? " And next time your co-worker uses her status, say something like, "I will run that by the boss, I'm sure he would like to know." Don't let her walk all over you or she will just continue to take advantage.

Hollie,
Any advice for me? I do not like my sons teacher. I feel offended by her. I think her teaching ways are terrible. I have not gone to the principal yet, but I want to. I volunteer at the school sometimes so I don't want to be finger pointed. I have heard her yell on numerous occasions and my son is terrified of her to the point he is having nightmares. What would you do?

I think you should absolutely go to the Principal. And if that doesn't work, go over their head and go to the superintendent. Who cares who finger points when your kid is involved.

Hollie is right, what do you care if someone points a finger at you? Isn't your son important? The teacher is wrong.

Hi Hollie,
I hope you have a great Thanksgiving. I like the advice and comments you give and the recipies are very good, I tried the tater tot dip and it was a big hit with my sons hockey team. I wonder, do you have a favorite restaurant that you like to go to? It doesn't have to be in Tewksbury, so no one get all hissy over it. I don't even live in Tewksbury, but read this for your column. I remember the lady got hissy at you for suggesting a breakfast place in NH. how funny. Well where do you and your family go for good meals? Thanks Jennifer Conolly

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for reading the blog. I hope you have a nice Thanksgiving too. My family and I like to dine out and are always looking for a new great place to go. Some of our favorites are Capellini's in Tewksbury for their Chicken Broccoli and Pasta, Cafe Escadrille in Burlington for their prime rib, Santarpios in East Boston for their pizza of course, and Kowloons in Saugus for their Chinese food.

Hollie,
What do you think of the whole Pit Bull debate? Good or bad?

Hi Queen,
Love the moniker. Personally I think any breed of dog is a reflection of its owner. Pit Bulls get a bad rap all the time. Matter of fact alot of people are ignorant to the word "bull" in any dog breed. We have a pit bull in our family and she is sweet and playful, not at all vicious. I know a Bull Mastiff that is the most gentle dog on Earth, but because he is 175 pounds and he has "bull" in his name, people's first thought is to be scared of him and that he must be mean. Which is sad because he is far from it. I have had two bulldogs, and people always assume because they have "bull" in their names, they are mean, well again not the case. It really goes without saying for any kind of dog. For instance, I have a chihuahua and people think that she is a "yapper"..well suprise, she's not. She hardly barks at all. So my thoughts on Pit Bulls, or any kind of dog is that it is all in the owner, the training, and the environment it is raised in.

Hollie is right. Every dog should be a reflection of its owner. Dogs are not vicious by nature. It's a stereotype.

Hollie, What do you think about giving your boss a Christmas gift? mine gives me something every year and I never reciprocate because I think it is inappropriate. My wife says I should get something.

Hello,
I think that if your boss gives you a gift, and you have that type of relationship with him or her, then a gift is appropriate. He obviously feels like he needs to get you something every year. Does he give gifts to the whole company or just you? Are they good gifts? I don't mean that in a greedy way, I mean it's not like he is giving you a company pen, or T-shirt is he? If that is the case, then a simple thank you is appropriate. If he is going out of his way to get you something nice, like a new golf club, or a gift card for you and your wife to go to dinner, then a small token of your appreciation would be fine. Some suggestions could be, a gift basket, a bottle of his favorite scotch, or a nice bottle of red wine and two wine glasses. Maybe he likes football or baseball, then something sports oriented would be nice. What does he do on his off days? Carpentry? a new hammer or set of screwdrivers would work. If you feel like you really don't want to get him something, then you should maybe mention it before Christmas comes that you feel uncomfortavle accepting a gift from him being your boss and all. It seems like if he does it every year, then he is doing it out of the goodness of his heart, and you are just accepting them which kind of makes you look like a dink. Maybe he might like to get something in return. Everyone says it is better to give than receive you know.
