On Sunday November 4th the Tewksbury Redmen Squirt A Hockey Team played in front of a loud hometown crowd at Breakaway Ice Center and skated away with a convincing 9-0 win. Faces in the crowd included current Redmen Mite stars Jason Cooke, Matt Cooke, Andrew Della Piana, and Brady Chapman; Redmen Soccer stars Tory Sweeney, Allie Cooke, and Lyla Chapman; along with Molly McDonough and McKenzie Tingtella.
The Redmen came out flying and set the tone early, letting Marblehead know it would be a long day for them. The line of Shayne MacDonald, Evan Zonderman, and Jake McDonough put immediate pressure on the Marblehead net but their goalie was able to make a handful of outstanding saves. Marblehead fought back early on but Redmen goalie Caulin Martel was up to the challenge making 3 highlight reel saves to keep the game scoreless. The Redmen used their speed and skating ability to take a 1-0 lead as Trevor Lindsey made a great defensive play at his own blue line breaking up a Marblehead forward. Jake McDonough picked up the loose puck and skated in on a breakaway, beating the goalie with a great deke move. He celebrated by flying into the boards, crashing right in front of the Redmen Mite players!!! The Redmen kept coming and quickly increased their lead to 2-0 as Shayne MacDonald slammed in a rebound off a hard wrist shot from Evan Zonderman. The Redmen scored again as the 1st period was winding down as the "Girl Power" line of Julia Stanizzi, Kaylen Taddia, and Maci Chapman used their speed and toughness to outwork the Marblehead defense. Kaylen sent a great pass to Maci on the left wing boards, Maci skated around a Marblehead defender, circled the net and fired a wrist shot that the goalie saved but right wing Stanizzi was in the perfect position on the far post and fired the puck into the back of the net for the 3-0 lead.
The 2nd period was totally dominated by the Redmen as they had at least 15-20 shots on goal. Timmy Sweeney got the Redmen going early in the 2nd period as he beat the Marblehead forward to a loose puck in the neutral zone, he sent a great cross-ice pass to Aidan Silvia who worked the puck into the Marblehead zone. Silvia sent a pass to Justin Rooney who was skating through the high slot area and Rooney wasted no time firing a wrist shot over the goalie's glove for the 4-0 lead. The Redmen got great defensive efforts from Austin Tingtella, Jared LeGrand, Chance Fitzgerald, Jade Owirka, and Trevor Lindsey. The Redmen "D-Crew" have been great all year and proved again today that there might not be a better group of defenseman in the entire Valley League. The "Girl Power" line struck again...this time Julia Stanizzi and Maci Chapman worked the cycle down low behind the Marblehead net, and Maci found Kaylen Taddia on the left face-off dot. Kaylen made a great deke move around a defender and quickly got to the net where she fired a hard shot into the net for her 1st goal of the year and a 5-0 lead. The game then turned into the Jake McDonough show as he scored 2 goals in less than 45 seconds increasing the lead to 7-0. Both goals were worthy of ESPN's "Play of the Day". Jared LeGrand assisted on both of Jake's goals.
The 3rd period started with Timmy Sweeney gaining control of the puck and working it into the Marblehead zone where he sent a nice pass back to defenseman Chance Fitzgerald. Fitzy wasted no time and fired a hard wrist shot that the Marblehead goalie never saw until he was picking it out of the back of the net. The Redmen kept coming and had more scoring chances from Austin Tingtella, Aidan Silvia, and Jade Owirka that were turned away by the Marblehead goalie. Marblehead was able to get pressure on the Redmen net but goalie Caulin Martel was there to shut the door on any scoring chances and secured his shutout. Evan Zonderman closed out the scoring for the Redmen taking a nice pass from Jake McDonough, splitting the defenseman, and beating the goalie with a nice wrist shot and the 9-0 win for the Redmen.
