Tewksbury residents found it was pretty easy to be "green" when they ventured to the Town Common on Saturday for the first Earth Day Celebration. Numerous eco-friendly organizations set up booths at the event, educating the public and providing information on upcoming events. Among the groups represented were the Tewksbry Green Committee, armer Dave's CSA and Zero Waste Day. Ira Toyota brought two of its hybrid cars to the event. There were food trucks with a wide variety of tasty treats, alpacas and a Tewksbury Girls Scout Troop was onhand to provide face painting. Senior Editor Bill Gilman …

Tewksbury High School held its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 9 in the new school's gymnasium. As always, the ceremony featured stirring musical performances, including four service songs performed by the TMHS faculty. Among the speakers were two TMHS seniors who will be heading into the military after graduation. They spoke of the reasons behind their decision. A powerful speech was delivered by School Committee member Dennis Francis, the text of which is attached to this story as a PDF document.

Election Day 2012 is in the history books but it will be remembered for years to come. It was a day when incumbents Jim Miceli and Barry Finegold swept to easy victories. But it was also a day when Tewksbury was introduced to its new state representative (Jim Lyons), new Congressman (John Tierney) and new United States Senator (Elizabeth Warren). Hundreds of children were on hand Sunday to enjoy the festivities of Safe Halloween, a festival hosted each year by the Tewksbury Police Department at the Saunders Recreation Complex, in coorperation with the School Department's Community Services Department. From photo ops with Police K9 Geox, to playing on several different types of vehicles, there was plenty of fun activities for the kids to take part in. On Sunday, Oct. 14 the Tewksbury Fire Department through its S.A.F.E Program hosted its annual Open House in support of National Fire Prevention Week. Fire Prevention Week takes place each year during the second week in October and commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Fire prevention and safety is something that we in the fire department practice and promote throughout the year. This week gives us another tool to share our prevention and safety message with the public. The 10th Annual Student Showcase at T.H.E. Farm at Strongwater took place on Saturday, September 22, 2012. The event highlighted the progress made by students over the past several months. The event is also a testimony to the amazing therapeutic work done every day at T.H.E. Farm. Photographer Shawn Hansen was on-hand at the event and captured these images.
The sign out front said "LeLacheur Field." But for the Friends of Special Education Kids (FOSEK) Titan Tee-ballers, it was, without question, their field of dreams. Last week, these young ballplayers, along with their "Buddy" players, had the chance to step out onto the home field of the Lowell Spinners and play a brief game before the Spinners' game that night. Even veteran teachers will tell you that they still get butterflies the night before the first day of school. That nervous anticipation is often shared by students as they preapre to meet their new teacher and, in some cases, new classmates. While Tuesday morning's rain showers made opening day a bit soggy in the Tewksbury Public School District, it did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of students, teachers and administrators. After a rainy start, Saturday turned into a lovely day in the Merrimack Valley, making the job of Shawn Hanson quite a bit easier. The Tewksbury Patch photographer roamed around town snapping photos of people who live, work and shop in Tewksbury. He put together this slaice of Tewksbury Life.
For 13 straight years, the Tewksbury Community Food Pantry has held a benefit golf tournament at the Tewksbury Country Club. Much has changed over the years. Participation has grown, the TCC Clubhouse was constructed. But one thing has reamined the same -- the tournament has never been rained out. This year's tournament featured 71 golfers teeing it up under sunny skies on Aug. 10. The winning team, with a score of 7-under par was Paul Kelley, Mark Kelley, Seth Starr and Janet Bronstein. This past Saturday (July 21), bargain hunters were able to find a treasure trove of great deals at the Giant Yard Sale hosted by the Tewksbury Senior Center.  Approximately 25 tables were set up, as the yard sale went from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. At the yard sale there was a slew of nicknaks to buy. To name a few there were sports books, cassette tapes, deodorant, snow globes, and hand crafted decorations made by Peter Foy of Tewksbury out of old bowling balls! The weather may have been seltering hot but the children of Tewksbury kept their cool on the Fourth of July at the Saunders Recreation Complex. For the youngsters, the day began with a series of athletic races. In some, the kids ranforward. In others, they ran backward. And then, of course, there was the traditional sack races. Famous Nathan's can have their hot dogs. When it comes to eating contests, there is nothing like the pie and watermelon eating contests at the Tewksbury Fourth of July celebration at Saunders Recreation Complex. One of the most popular features at the annual Tewksbury Fourth of July Celebration is the Little Miss and Little Mister competitions. This year's mini-pageant featured an appearance by Miss Massachusetts. Editor Bill Gilman attended the event at the Saunders Recreation Complex and captured these images.
With temperatures over 90 degrees the most popular features of the Safe Summer Kickoff and Bike Rodeo were th snowcones and the water slide! The Tewksbury School Department and Police Department kicked off summer in style with a wild, wet party at the Saunders Recreation Area last week. In addition to the water slide and snowcones, there was spin art, ince cream and, of course, the Police Department's annual Bike Rodeo. Editor Bill Gilman was on hand and captured these images.
