For those who appreciate a variety of delicious food, there is no local event quite like A Taste of Tewksbury. Laste week, hundreds of residents gathered at the Tewksbury Country Club to sample the offerings of some of the town's best restaurants. The event is put on each year by the Tewksbury Rotary Club as a fundraiser for the group's scholarship program. According to Rotary officials, the event raised enough money to provide scholarships to five high school students. Nearly 20 community leaders, educators and parents gathered at Dewing Elementary School last week to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) and to assist the school in participating for the first time in the Read Across America program. The guest readers, who included members of the Board of Selectmen and School Committee, among others, read to Dewing students in the first and second grades. Dr. Seuss Day, marking the birthday of the late children's author Theodor Geisel, was celebrated last week at Heath Brook School. The fashion of the day was crazy hats and editor Bill Gilman was on hand to capture images of some of the craziest.
Tewksbury VFW Post 8164 recently hosted its 2011 Voice of Democracy Awards dinner. Teens participating in the Voice of Democracy contest for high school students and Patriot's Pen competition for junior high students were honored. Taking home the top prizes were Brian Grayson (Voice of Democracy) and Cassidy McAuliffe (Patriot's Pen). Each received a $50 prize and had their entry submitted to the district competition. It was a long time in the planning and execution but Walmart's Tewksbury location, 333 Main St., is now officially a Super Walmart, complete with full grocery section and other expanded offerings. The store celebrated with a Grand Re-opening last week. Among those in attendance at the event was Selectman Doug Sears and state Rep. Paul Adams. Keith Michael Johnson vitied the Dewing School earlier this month with his presentation of “Bubbleology – the Secret World of Bubbles." He gave two performances, one for the kindergarten and one for the first and second graders as part of the school's arts and enrichment programming. The program encompassed principles of science, math and fun! The children loved it!
Wilmington hosted Tewksbury in the opening round of its annual holiday tournament, but the Wildcats weren't in a very giving mood during Tuesday action. The hosts built a 25-19 halftime lead and pushed it into double digits for most of the second half. Though a Redmen three-pointer helped them climb back into single digits with 3:30 to play, the Wildcats regained momentum and went on to a 62-52 win.

At Saturday's Santa Social at Krochmal Farm, Santa presented a check to an honoree of the Krochmal Cares for Kids Fundraiser held in November, Nicholas DiFelice. This year's annual Lowell Assembly of God Drive thru Nativity event was extremely well attended. A constant flow of vehicles passed through the church parking lot, kicking off the Christmas season with a live nativity show narrated by true professionals. On Wednesday, Nov. 23, 6th grade students at the Ryan School experienced a rite of passage as they competed in the annual Turkey Trot. Teams competed by earning points through a poster making contest, collection of donations for the Tewksbury Community Pantry, and a series of relay races (involving a frozen turkey, of course). Although the competition is for 6th grade only, 5th grade families were also invited to donate items to the Pantry. Parent volunteers transported the three mini-vans full of donations …
It was a boisterous night of music and dancing on Nov. 18 at the Tewksbury Country Club. The Friends of the Patriotic Activity Committee sponsored the event, which serves as one of the major fundraisers for the group. The FOPAC helps to pay for community events such as the Fourth of July Fireworks display and the Memorial Day Parade. Editor Bill Gilman attended the event and captured these photos.
