MSPCA-Nevins Farm Seeks Home for Chihuahua Missing Hind Feet

A sweet eight-year-old Chihuahua with no hind feet was brought to the MSPCA-Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen, Mass., on June 29 by a good Samaritan who found the dog hobbling along a busy street in downtown Lawrence.   The Chihuahua, nicknamed “Mr. Drummond” by adoption center staff, presented a unique challenge for an organization determined to find him the perfect new home.

In addition to his handicap Mr. Drummond showed obvious signs of years-long neglect.  His nails were severely overgrown, he was underweight and most of the hair around his ears had fallen out.  Still, the dog showed a survivor’s spirit from the day he arrived.  And his surrender provoked stirring memories of the 2011 surrender of three Chihuahuas who were born without front legs.  Those dogs were ultimately fitted with special wheelchairs and, shortly after, adopted into new homes.

“We’re not certain how Mr. Drummond lost his feet, but it’s possible he was born this way or had a traumatic injury in the past that has since healed.  He’s learned to make the most of his condition, however,” said Mike Keiley, director of the Noble Family Animal Care and Adoption Center at MSPCA-Nevins Farm.  Because of his age, Keiley believes the dog once had a home but was either lost or abandoned.  “He had no identification tags or microchip, and no owner has stepped forward to claim him.  Now, more than two weeks after his arrival, we would like to find him the home he deserves,” added Keiley.

Finding the Perfect Home

Because of Mr. Drummond’s unique condition Keiley and his team are searching for an understanding adopter who will give him the time and attention he needs.  The dog has settled comfortably into his temporary shelter and is very friendly—but frightened of his new environment.

“We’re confident the perfect home awaits Mr. Drummond and the challenge now is to find it,” said Keiley. “We’ve made a commitment to this dog and we won’t rest until he’s found his person or family who will appreciate his uniqueness and provide him the level of care he needs.”
