Thanks for Success at Town Clean Up Day!

What makes a town better?  Its citizens!  And last Saturday, June 28, eleven teams of citizens joined ranks with the Tewksbury Beautification Committee for the first of many Town Clean-up Days to come.  Some were family groups, church groups, as well as pairs of friends who regularly walk and experience some sad looking locations first hand.  Most folks signed up in advance on-line, but they were joined by walk-ins who chipped in to help as well.

The sunny weather cooperated and together we cleaned up nearly 8 miles of Tewksbury roads (both sides = 16 miles of cleaned area).  Most locations were designated by the DPW as those most in need of care, or deemed so by local residents.  The newly neater locations include:

·       Old Boston Road

·       Main Street from South St. to Wilmington Line

·       Area around the corner of Shawsheen and Patten

·       East St. from Maple to Andover Line

·       Pond Street from Whipple to Pine

·       Clark Road behind and around Stadium Plaza

·       Intersection of Whipple and Pleasant

·       Intersection of Whipple and Chandler

·       Maple Street

·       Wameset Indian Triangle.

·       Houlihan Traffic Island

It was a true community collaborative project.  Home Depot donated bags and gloves, town groups and departments loaned traffic cones, vests and pick-up sticks. Market Basket and MVP Laser Tag & Mini Golf provided great gifts for a raffle in which all participants were entered.  But it was clear that everyone worked for a neater Tewksbury, not for prizes.

Best of all, an estimated 40, forty-two gallon bags were filled with road side trash.  That’s about 750 lbs. of litter collected; better known as success!

A cleaner town is great for those who live here, better for business and can help to improve our economy and the tax base.  Tewksbury is a “neat” place to live.  With a little effort it can be even neater and a tidy place as well.
