An Upcoming Quilt Show, Drug Awareness Week and More From the Tewksbury Council on Aging

Departure time for the Salem Cross Inn and Quabbin Reservoir day trip of this Friday, Oct. 18 is 9:45 a.m. 

The Piecemakers will hold their Annual Quilt Show at the Senior Center on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20. The hours of the show are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days. Admission is $6 and luncheon specials are available for purchase.

The Tewksbury Board of Selectmen have declared the week on Oct. 20 “Tewksbury's Drug Awareness Week”.  The week will start off with an Overdose Vigil on the State Grounds on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. in remembrance of those who have died as a result of drug addition, as well as those loved ones who are in recovery.  The public is welcomed to attend.

During Tewksbury's Drug Awareness Week, the Board of Health will host prescription drug abuse discussions for senior citizens at the Center's various events.  The goal is to reach out and educate the senior population and help prevent additional problems from happening to their loved ones.  The discussions will include safely disposing of unwanted and unused medications. These discussions are among the various programs being presented to residents of all ages from school children and their parents to the general population.

The MS Suppport Group will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, October 21st at 10:00 AM.  In the afternoon on Oct. 21 there will be a Senior Center Cootie Party which begins at 12:30 p.m.  All are welcome to both happenings.

Wednesday cribbage and Thursday whist activities will not be held next week on the 23rd and 24th.  Both activities will resume the following week as regularly scheduled.

Elder Services of the Merrimack Valley SHINE Coordinator, Susan Cripps, will be at the Senior Center on Friday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. to discuss Medicare and supplemental medigap coverages.  The public is welcome to attend this informative presentation.  In order that we may have an idea of how many people will be attending this presentation, it is asked that you call the Center at 978-640-4480 and have your name added to the attendance list.  Thank you.

The Friends Halloween Dance will be held in the evening on Friday October 25th beginning at 7 p.m. A costume contest will be held at 7:15 p.m.  Music will be provided by the Fred Manzi Band.  Tickets are now available and also available at the door at $10.

A Cribbage Tournament will be held at the Senior Center on Saturday, Oct. 26.  The registration fee is $20 per person.  One may register prior to the tournament or upon arrival at noon on the day of the tournament. 

Then on Sunday, Oct. 27 the Seniors will hold a Breakfast Benefit and Mini Fair at the Senior Center.  The Breakfast will be held from 7 to 11 a.m.; and, the Mini Fair will be open from 7 a.m. to noon.  Table space is available to the public for the Fair.

The Police Department will hold its 15th Annual Community Safe Halloween on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at MVP, 2087 Main Street.  There will be games, face painting, safety demos,dancing, music and lots, lots more...a great day for all our Tewksbury children and grandchildren.

DJ Jon Mansfield will be back for an afternoon dance on Monday, Sept. 28.  Those purchasing tickets ($6) by Oct. 23 will have lunch included.

On Oct. 30, the staff from the D'Youville Wellness Center will be at the Tewksbury Senior Center to talk about “Replacement Surgery – Before, During and After”.  This event is open to the public and will take place at 10 a.m.  If planning to attend, please call the Center at 978-640-4480 to put your name on the attendance list.  Likewise, it is asked that one call the Senior Center to have his/her name put on the attendance list for the following Medigap presentations:

  • Friday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. – Tufts Health Medical Preferred by Gerald Lodge;
  • Friday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. – Fallon Health Care by Heather Bousquet; 
  • Friday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. – BC/BS by Heather Hurd
Tickets are also available for the following Red Hat Carnation Belles activities:
  • Wednesday, Oct. 30 – Red Hat Halloween Party – supper & Amazing Sensations  $15
  • Wednesday, Nov. 20 – Buffalo Bingo and refreshments -  $5  
  • Thursday, Dec. 12 – HuKeLau for lunch and a Christmas Show - $54
It should be noted that the Edwards Twins Show scheduled for November 3rd has been canceled.    

Dr. Smith will conduct a Podiatry Clinic at the Senior Center on Saturday, Nov. 16. Registrations are now being accepted.  The fee for the clinic is $15.  This clinic is limited to 35 Tewksbury Senior Citizens.  This clinic is funded in part by the Council on Aging.

Tickets are now available for: the COA & Friends Christmas Dinner of Friday, Dec. 6; the Blues Brothers Show of Friday, Dec. 13 which is being funded, in part, by the local Arts Council and the Massachusetts Cultural Council; and, the Friends New Year's Eve Dinner/Dance of Thursday, Dec. 31.  Additional information can be obtained at the Senior Center.
