UPDATED: Was There a UFO Over South Tewksbury Thursday Night?

Low flying jet aircraft reportedly circled the area twice before flying off.

Did South Tewksbury get buzzed by a UFO on the night of Thursday, Nov. 29?

No cattle are missing, there are no reported abductions and no crop circles but there was certainly some odd activity in the skies.

Resident Tom DeVeau took video of what appears and sounds to be a jet aircraft of some type flying very low over his South Tewksbury neighborhood.

That, in itself, might not be so strange, but Deveau said the aircraft circled his neighborhood twice before flying off. The video he took was of the aircraft making its second pass.

Tewksbury Police had not heard about the incident. A spokesman for the FAA said they are looking at the DeVeau video and checking radar data and will try and come up with an answer for what type of aircraft it was and what it was doing.

Take a look at the video. What do you think this is? Private jet? Military aircraft? UFO? Santa arriving early for tonight's Lighting of the Common?

I was sitting in the parking lot at the Jr. High (sorry Wynn Middle School) and saw it too! It sort of freaked me out. It was pretty loud so that would indicate a military aircraft. He seemed awfully low and the noise is what caught my attention. I then figured it may be a plane circling an airport (perhaps Hanscom). I was very surprised to see it make a tight circle and come back (almost over Mahoney's). Very strage indeed. I was curious if I was going to read about this plane on the news...I guess I just did!

It's pretty lit up and kind of low but other than that it's just a jet. It may be military but my guess is private.

Same here. First pass we all stopped in our tracks. Went out on deck to see this huge plane right there! Wow! Then came around a second time not as low
Italian Mama November 30, 2012 at 04:42 PM
could be from Hanscom AFB? Its pretty local. Good job Tom!
CM9 November 30, 2012 at 05:15 PM
Could have been military, hearing the sound of the engine. We live in South Tewks and never heard it ourselves, must have been fast asleep. Seen plenty of low flying aircraft over the years, usually during the day though. Possible it was a plane heading to Hanscom. Or maybe it was Santa practicing his approach! :-)
Nicole Veno November 30, 2012 at 05:26 PM
I heard it too. Sounded like it was right outside my window.

I heard it and it did stop me in my tracks. Didn't know they could fly that low over a residential area.

Maybe it was someone looking to land at the old Tewksbury Airport and realized after they got to the area it was no longer there? I don't know, but I would think military would know where they were going and a sightseer would do it during daylight.
Tom DeVeau November 30, 2012 at 08:28 PM
I just want to be clear that never did I think this was a UFO, clearly a military jet and definitely cool to see in person...this video doesn't do it any justice. Was more curious as to why it was so low and circled the area twice. We don't really see planes like this in Tewksbury...especially so close.
TomH November 30, 2012 at 09:04 PM
Planes are flying really low over South Tewksbury all the time. I think one of the approach routes to Logan has them curving over the area. However, this video shows a plane lower and curving tighter than I am used to seeing.

That's one dangerous maneuver to be pulling off at night but don't hold your breath waiting for a response from the Gov't...maybe a response from someone claiming to be the Gov’t but either way it was idiotic so I suspect the Gov't to be behind this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_Qy5_tFgkA Most likely this is what is was.

OK, I can buy it being a C-5 transport. But I'm still curious why it circled twice before moving on.

I was sitting at my table, I love in north tewksbury, and I heard it go over my house and it shook the pictures on my wall. Very strange.
Tom DeVeau November 30, 2012 at 11:26 PM
It wasn't a c5. As it passed overhead, it had the outline of a jet, more like an f18.
Robert Bennett December 01, 2012 at 03:48 AM
It definitely was not a C-5. Those are like a football field flying over you - unmistakably HUGE! This was not a fighter jet either. It was a medium to large private jet (possibly military). Although ironically, I just read about a drone crashing in Maryland. That flight pattern would seem like an out of control drone, but I clearly saw two large engines (one on each wing)....

Call me skeptical, but there is no way a jet of that size makes a turn that tight. IMO, the camera rotated (you can see it happening relative to the electrical wires at .08 sec in the video), not the aircraft. To do so would require the jet to roll causing the wings to move from horizontal to an attitude of one lower than the other. I don't see this happening at all in the video. Also, listen to the sound of the turbines, no change, the jet is under low power. My opinion is that it's a typical mid-sized commercial jet liner, maybe a 737 or an Airbus 319 or 320 on a typical approach to Logan. Happens all the time when the winds are out the south or sw. They fly directly over my house on a north northwest to south southeast path, which would come from the direction of the Wynn over my house to Logan.

Boeing 737 filmed from below on approach (listen to the sound of the turbines) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDTPyFU3t-g

OK, I did a bit of research. On that night at roughly 7:38, a Boeing 707 did move through the area at low altitude, make a turn and head to Hanscom and land. You can see it here: http://www4.passur.com/bos.html You'll have to have your Java plug-in current and filter on the day and time. I started at 19:30 and clicked on 10X speed (otherwise, it's mindnumbingly slow). Arrivals are to Logan are blue. Aircraft traversing the airspace are black. You can click on an individual aircraft to see it's credentials, it's elevation, origin and destination.

Awesome insight Billvill, thank you! According to the flight tracker - http://flightaware.com/live/flight/MTH4PA/history/20121130/0025Z/KPSM/KBED/tracklog - it says the altitude was 2000ft at the time it was over my house. There's no chance. Also, on this page - http://flightaware.com/live/flight/MTH4PA/history/20121130/0025Z/KPSM/KBED - it says the 707 landed in Hanscom at 7:12pm. Did it take off from Hanscom again and loop around and land back at Hanscom? We may have our answer though...
billvill December 01, 2012 at 04:09 PM
Tom, That link says it took off at 7:25 and landed at 7:36. Here's the real tell though, (Distance Direct: 48 sm Planned: 49 sm Flown: 57 sm) Says its was a 49 mile planned flight, but that it was actually 57 miles, which could explain the loop(s) around Tewksbury. Not quite sure I understand what you mean by 'Not a chance' though.
billvill December 01, 2012 at 04:10 PM
Says the Jet is registered to MIT.
billvill December 01, 2012 at 04:41 PM
One other thing to consider Tom, the FAA delays the reporting of aircraft position in flight by sometimes as long as 20 min. (to prevent those with nefarious intent from knowing exactly where an aircraft would be at a specific time).
Russ December 01, 2012 at 05:14 PM
I saw it land in a field behind my house and I started talking to the aliens I swear to god
Tom DeVeau December 01, 2012 at 05:36 PM
What I meant by no chance was there was no way it was 2000ft in elevation when it passed over my house. 1000 maybe...at most, but seemed like 500.
Raymond Nichols December 01, 2012 at 07:46 PM
Most likely it was a 707. They are the military refueling aircraft also known as KC-135's. There main Station in the North East is in Portsmouth New Hampshire. The odd thing is UFOstalker.com has a report of a sighting in Andover/ Tewksbury River rd that night as well. http://www.ufostalker.com/ufostalker/Black+Triangle+Sighting+in+AndoverTewksbury+Line+Massachusetts+United+States+on+November+29th+2012/44234 Tom the links you reported there being four flights that night between BED and PSM, and oddly enough the flight's were paired together. Very strange how the pair in each group doesn't have a logged time of landing. Call me crazy but I think what you saw was a KC-135 providing identity coverage for a TR-3B unconfirmed top secret military aircraft.

we call those jets where i come from, nothing to see here move along

Why would noone consider the possibility of it being a smaller private/commuter jet, having to circle while waiting for clearance to land at Hanscom? Obviously sounds like a jet, has lights marking it's shape, like a plane, and all . . . from what I can see on the tape, in relation to the house, didn't seem that low at all to me, but I wasn't standing there, in person, either. One night -- I think last summer -- I was going into Oakdale lot from Shawsheen Street and my neighbor and someone else were stopped just inside the parking lot staring at a VERY low-flight jet--and, not a private one at all! I grew up beside Hanscom in the flight path and was used to every type of plane in the 50's & '60's, and then some. Broke the sound barrier many times w/o warning--that'll knock your socks off; saw them refueling in air many times, watched the air shows, etc.., but never have I seen a jet fly over the intersection at Oakdale as low as that one did. We were all just shocked.
