Community of Artists Put Finishing Touches on Work, Fall Events

Community of Artists is getting ready for fall festivals.

As the humid summer air begins to lift and the days begin to shrink, members of the Tewksbury Community of Artists are putting the final touches on their pallets in preparation for their two big fall events, the Pumpkin Art Festival and the annual Art Festival.

Established in 1993, the Tewksbury Community of Artists is a group of artists varying in age and art medium with one common passion, art. Through their 18 years the group has blossomed to more than 40 people, representing myriad art forms, enriching the community with annual arts festivals, workshops and lessons.

Maria Galante, Tewksbury Community of Artists Webmaster, media contact and member, who has been a part of the community since its inception, said one of the great aspects of the community is how many different art disciplines are represented.

"There is a huge variety of art forms within the community and at the festival: watercolor, photography, woodwork, woodblock print and many others," she said. "The variety [at the events] is very broad, but the bulk is in traditional art."

The first of the Tewksbury Community of Artists two main events is the Pumpkin Art Festival Fine Art and Craft Exhibit and Sale, formerly Art on the Common, Saturday, Sept. 11. The Pumpkin Art Festival is an annual outdoor event where members and non-members sell and demonstrate their work to the public.

Just one short month later, on Oct. 22 and 23, the Tewksbury Community of Artists will be holding its annual Art Festival. Participants include members and non-members, as well as students from all the Tewksbury schools. This event showcases artistic talent, both young and veteran, and makes it a day for the family offering refreshments and chances to meet and speak with the artists.

As a member of the Tewksbury Community of Artists, artists can participate for free in all events and art shows, including a free art show at the library. They also have the opportunity to attend workshops, rent studio space, as well as discount admission to the MFA and ICA.

"One great benefit of being a member is you are connected with other people who share the same passion as you," Galante said.

Like many members of the Tewksbury Community Artists, Galante doesn't just stick to one art form. She is a full-time graphic designer and graphic design teacher who enjoys many varying degrees of art: calligraphy, pastels, monoprint and sculpture book.

"I like being a part  of the community because lots of other people, who are also part of the community, have different skills like I do, and I like seeing what other people are doing and learning from them."
