A local union officially opened its doors this week, hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning at its new Main Street headquarters.

Building Wreckers Local Union 1421 of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA) showed off their new facility, which is located at 1150 Main Street in Tewksbury.

Members of LIUNA joined state and local dignitaries at the ribbon cutting ceremony, including Rep. Jim Miceli, who participated in the festivities.

According to the Local Union, more than 800 construction craft laborers belong to the organization, which was established in 1939.

"This building is a tribute to our past and our future," said LIUNA general secretary-treasurer and New England regional manager Armand E. Sabitoni, according to a press release by the organization. "It is a symbol and reminder to this community, this city and the great state of Massachusetts that LIUNA and Local 1421 are here to stay. This new hall is a beacon of hope, strength and opportunity for all those fortunate enough to call themselves laborers. It represents the path to the middle class, paved with family supporting wages and benefits and safe working conditions."

Tewksbury is not a city. It is a town.
