Dear Fitness Coach,
I'm really frustrated with all the conflicting information out there regarding what diets and/or foods are recommended: low-fat or low-carb or low-sugar or high-protein or vegan or gluten-free or macrobiotic or superfood, etc., etc. - See what I mean??
Diet Dilemma
Dear Dilemma,
I agree, there is a vast amount of diet info out there - and some eating plans seem in direst conflict with others. Your best approach is to treat any diet as a lifestyle: Can you see yourself on a gluten-free or vegan-eating plan for the rest of your life? Most so-called diets are too restrictive to be compliant long-term, which puts you at high risk for failure. To help you decide, Prevention Magazine came up with a list of new rules to follow when looking to change up your eating routine.
- New Rule #1
Cook real food. It's healthier, less expensive and gives you control over what you eat. - New Rule #2
Buy foods that pull their nutritional weight. Learn to read labels and choose food high in protein and fiber and low in sugar and saturated fat. - New Rule #3
Cut down on red meat to once a week. The rest of the week, eat poultry, fish and soy proteins. - New Rule #4
Ditch dieting for good. Understand that food that is good for your health is also good for your waistline. - New Rule #5
Eat your way well. Use food instead of medicine to cure what ails you from heart disease and diabetes to acid reflux to low energy.
