Charles W. Ryan, 84

Retired from the Tewksbury School Department.

Charles W. “Charlie” Ryan, age 84, died peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, January 8, at the Laconia Rehabilitation Center in Laconia, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of the late Joan (Consavage) Ryan, and later, the late Joan (Grogan) Ryan.

Charlie was born in Boston on August 16, 1928, a son of the late Charles and Frances (Maze) Ryan, and was raised in Wilmington. He graduated from Wilmington High School.

During the Korean War, he enlisted into the U.S. Army, and served his tour of duty in Korea. Upon discharge and marriage, he settled in Tewksbury. He worked in the Maintenance Department for the Tewksbury School Department for 35 years, before his retirement. Since retirement, he wintered in South Carolina and Florida and moved permanently to Haines City, Florida, nine years ago.

Charlie is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Daniel Barnhart of Gilford, NH, and Donna Smith of Laconia; a daughter-in-law, Catherine “Cathie” (DeAngelis) Ryan of Chelmsford, who was the wife of his late son, Charles E. “Chuck” Ryan; seven grandchildren, Jason Barnhart and his wife Mary of Hawaii, Sara Smith, Christopher Frank both of Laconia, Matthew Ryan of Chelmsford; Cheri Barnhart of Haverhill, MA; Gabriel Fisher of Hawaii, and Jermemy Fisher of Viet Nam; seven great grandchildren, Nathan, Natalie, Ryan, Tyler, Dante, Mikey, and Jamie; a sister, Eileen Anderson of Tewksbury; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wives and son, he was predeceased by his sister, Lorraine Young; and brothers, Paul R. Ryan and Robert Ryan.

Visiting hours Friday, January 11, from 4 to 7 in the Tewksbury Funeral Home, corner of 1 Dewey and 975 Main Sts. (Rte. 38) TEWKSBURY CENTER, phone (800 in MA or 978) 851 2950. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 12, at 11am in the funeral home, followed by burial with Army Honors at St. Mary Cemetery in No. Tewksbury.
