Obituary: Roy Patterson, 65, Was Lifelong Tewksbury Resident

The Tewksbury resident died unexpectedly of an apparent heart attack on Friday.

The following is an obituary courtesy of Tewksbury Funeral Home.

Roy E. Patterson, age 65, well known in the community as a businessman and leader in youth sports, died unexpectedly on Friday afternoon, May 2, at LGH’s Saints Campus, from an apparent heart attack. He was the beloved husband of Susan M. (Watson) Patterson, with whom he would have celebrated a 43rd wedding anniversary on June 13th.

Roy was born in Lowell, January 12, 1949, a son of the late Leroy F. and Barbara C. (Penney) Patterson, and was a lifelong Tewksbury resident. He graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School with the Class of 1966. He began his career as an auto body repairman with his uncle Stavley at Penney’s Auto Body in Tewksbury.

He went on to work with Hamel Brothers Auto Body in Lowell, until he founded his own business, Towne Auto Body in downtown Lowell. He retired from there after 30 years of ownership. Towne Auto Body sponsored a men’s softball team in Tewksbury for a number of years.

Roy was defined by his decades of contributions to youth sports. He coached in Tewksbury Youth Baseball, Tewksbury Youth Hockey, Tewksbury Memorial High School Freshman and Junior Varsity Baseball for ten years, as well as Northeast Baseball League.

He served on the Board of Directors for the T.Y. Baseball and T.Y. Hockey organizations and was a co-founder of the T.Y. Hockey Boosters Club. He was also a Senior Member of the Wamesit A.F.& A.M. DeMolay youth organization. Roy was also a member of the Tewksbury-Wilmington Elks, Lodge 2070.

Roy was raised in the Tewksbury Congregational Church, and received recognition by the Church for his longevity of membership.

Besides his beloved wife, he leaves his devoted son, Stephen Roy Patterson, and beloved grandson, Timothy Roy Patterson both of Tewksbury; three brothers and their spouses, Roland T. and his wife Jacqueline (Millette) Patterson of Lowell, Barry W. and his wife Sharon (Dobay) Patterson of Bradford, Charles E. and his wife Dawn (Spaulding) Patterson of Lowell, and an aunt, many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

He was predeceased by his sister, Sandra A. (Patterson) Williams, and a niece Alicia Dobay.

Visiting hours Tuesday, May 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by burial in Tewksbury Cemetery.
