Letter to the Editor: John Tierney is Not a Thief, Not a Liar and Not a Criminal

Hamilton attorney Jeffrey Scuteri writes in support of Congressman John Tierney for reelection.

To the Editor:

You may not like Congressman John Tierney’s vision for our country’s future or his stance on certain issues. You may not like that he stands with President Obama.  These are all valid reasons not to vote for John Tierney.

However, the one reason that should not prevent you from voting for John Tierney is his character. John is not a thief. John is not a liar and John is not a criminal. John is a man of integrity and honesty and the people of the Sixth District who have watched him over 16 years know this.

When late in life John got married he unfortunately took on two felonious brothers-in-law. After they were convicted for tax evasion from the running of an illegal gambling ring, federal probation required that a business plan be provided, outlining how the brothers were to earn a living. They provided such a business plan and included consultation to a "legal gambling" business in Antigua, which was approved by a federal judge and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

When money started rolling in, it certainly looked like their business plan was working. It certainly appeared that way to the federal probation office, the court system monitoring their conduct and to the accountant who was reporting the money to the IRS. John was in the same shoes and learned that the legal gambling business was not, in fact, legal, as his brothers-in-law had contended, when the feds made their investigation public.

It is unfair that a Congressman with John’s history of unfaltering and unquestioned integrity is being dragged down by felons that he happens to be related to by marriage. It is unfair that no one is focusing on John’s job creation, or his untiring commitment to the middle class and the education of our children. It is also unfair that, although Mr. Tisei disavows any relationship to these groups, mailings keep showing up on our kitchen table that looks like the front page of The National Enquirer. Richard Tisei and the shadowy outside groups all know the truth, and wouldn’t have a chance to even challenge John if they argued his record as a Congressman.

If you don’t like John Tierney’s politics, don’t vote for him. But do not fall prey to those who delight in bringing down an innocent man who works everyday for the people of our District. It is unfair.

My neighbor is a policeman. He has two young girls. He earns his pay and at times, risks his life doing his job. He did the same in Iraq a few years ago. He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Two houses over is a firefighter. Two guys in his station house died putting out a fire in my town. These guys are running into a fires when everyone else is running out. A lot of conservative talkers begrudge my two neighbors good pay and good benefits. I do not. I do not begrudge paying my taxes for good schools, good police and good firemen. This is my community and I want it to be strong. And when my two neighbors retire, I want them to have economic security and health care security, which is exactly what I want for myself. I work in the city and wear a tie to work. They keep my community safe. I'm really sick of the way conservative talkers demonize union leaders, and who falsely call rank and file police, firefighters and teachers greedy; and falsely claim they have lavish benefits. Conservative talkers are pitting everyone else against those who choose to do what was considered honorable public service, when I was growing up. They are quick to forget who caused the great recession that cost 8.5 million jobs in America, $14 trillion in homeowner value, and budget crunches in state & local govt. It was Wall St and it was 100% avoidable. They sold crappy mortgage-backed securities around the globe and profited while everyone else lost.

Agree? Apparently you didn't really read my letter. Thankfully our government allows one the freedom to have right leaning beliefs, but my point was that one should vote against John Tierney only if you have those beliefs, and not vote against him because of the smoke screen put up by his opponent. You may not like his politics, but it is truly unfair to challenge his integrity. That was my point.

Great Neil, What about the Massport state trouper who makes $228,000.00 per year while storing his $80,000.00 SUV on state property and plugging his electricity into a state owned facility. Government empoloyment is off the Charts ! It's time that government service personel who serve us the tax payer made the same equal amount of pay for the same equal amount of work. City, Town, State and Federal employees who serve us the tax payer, who are employed by us the tax payer have been overcompensated. They receive, pensions, medical and extremely high salaries. If you ask me, the only public workers who earn their keep are the fire fighters. We have elderly taking home $1,200. 00 per month, while these men and women along with all other government workers are raking in the money on the backs of the poor and lowly paid tax payers. The private sector offers half what Government workers are making today, It's disgusting and disgraceful.

It never ceases to amaze me how naive yet know it all people are about the way government works. John Tierney is a good man and an excellent liberal politician. He is no more responsible for the actions of his family than I am for the my adult family's actions. He is no more responsible for every action of every government employee than Rudy Giuliani was for what did or didn't happen on 9/11. This personal and shallow knee jerk thinking is what's irresponsible in government today.

Whether you like Obama or not, we are going to get hit hard with Obama Care Cost, once he is or if Obama is re-elected. And if we have Warren, Obama, Tierney, within ten years all of us will be in the poor house together as the government through the health care mandate will have electronic access to withdraw from personel bank accounts. http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=HcBaSP31Be8&vg=medium
