Problems with Town Hall Drop off Box

Has anyone had any difficulties with the drop off box located outside the town hall office? I dropped my tax payment off on SUNDAY, FEB 2nd, & I called today and they stated they received it on Friday, Feb 7th, almost a week later. They claim that they empty the box every day, and they refuse to credit the finance charge. I don't understand how they can lose my payment for 5 days. Has anyone else experienced any problems???

dt - Sadly that is a he said/she said situation. Even mailing it to the lock box in Reading could result in the same answer if they said the payment was late. You wouldn't have any proof of receipt, i.e. the envelope with the post marked date. Apparently the only way to be sure is to drop off payments to the Tax Collector's office and get a receipt.

Best way is to walk into the office and make the payment. Also, do not attempt to make payment using banking on line as our Town Treasurers office does not have capability of receiving checks on line.

MD - I beg to differ with you regarding Tewksbury being able to accept online bill payments. The Town does have the capabilities as outlined on the Town page. BUT, if you paid your real estate tax, as an example, by online credit card it would add upwards of 3% to your payment. The added amount does not go to the Town BUT who in their right mind would want to pay more than the already exorbitant amount.

the Town doesn't have the capability to receive e-payments direct from a bank. Therefore, the bank is required to send out a paper check. So, then I experienced a late charge when it took 8 days for my payment to be rec'd. and was told by clerk in the Treasurer's office not to use this direct payment method.

Sorry about my previous post. Seeing as though it is on the Town's website I assumed it should work. Duh!! Not to you Maureen but the Town. If it, the system or procedure, does not work properly shouldn't the Town delete it from the options to pay from the bills and from their website? Did the (8) days late result in a late payment to you? And, if so, did they apologize and credit any late payment fee?

Thanks everyone for the comments. I've learned my lesson. I'm going to bring the tax payment down to the office like I usually do. I can't believe the office told me that leaving my payment in the drop box equated to mailing with the post office. Why do they even offer the drop box if it's not reliable!? Do they expect a person to drop off the payment a week ahead before the due date!!! Silly!

I always walk the check in and get the stamp on the bill. Well worth the five minutes.
