Smell on East Street

Does anyone know why it always stinks on East Street over near Strong Water Brook? I am pretty sure that is where they tore up road and repaired a few years back.

Maybe farm fertilizer for the state hospital farm? Board of Heath environmentalist could most likely answer the question.

" Almost the entire length of the Shawsheen River (Shawsheen River stations SH 0.0 - SH 15.8) falls with the town boundaries of Bedford, Billerica, Tewksbury and Andover. Therefore, septic systems are a potential source of bacteria for much of the Shawsheen River, and also for the following tributaries: Baker's Meadow, Content Brook, Roger's Brook, Hussey Pond, Spring Brook, Elm Brook, McKee, Webb and Jones Brooks, Strongwater Brook, Sutton Brook and Heath Brook."

There is a sewer pumping station near the intersection of East Street and Maple Street. That may be the source of the odors.

Fairly sure Mr. Rauseo is correct.....I've walked that area and it is definitely a sewer smell IMO.

Looking at the view of a topographic map there is shown what look to be an open-air lot described as a Sewage Disposal area. Located to the southeast edge of Strongwater Brook as it flows towards the Shawsheen river along Shawsheen St. This is an area just through the woods after the field running along Maple St. Must be it.

Odors are from the Tewksbury State Hospital - Sewage Treatment Plant. Demolished - yet is an open body of water according to Massachusetst DEP Online mapping.

Up until now ' when driving through the area - I usually would have accorded the odor to cow manure at the state fields. Since that not cow manure' I'll simple remember what it was like during the times when the cesspool pumping service was in the neighborhood.
