South St and Main St Intersection

Just read about another accident at the most dangerous intersection in Tewksbury

The Selectmen who live in South Tewksbury know firsthand of the problems there but they have seemingly kicked the can down the road so to say

They need to find a solution before it is too late and there is a major accident that results in someone's Loss  of limb or life.

The Town manager and should put this issue at the top of the Towns public safety priority list for 2014.

Bob, I so agree with you that that intersection is the most dangerous one in Tewksbury. Frequently when passing it there are red & blue flashing lights, and another accident has happened. I know that traffic lights can be a reason for a traffic backup, but maybe it could be one on a timer to compensate for off peak times. We don't want to wait for a fatality to rectify this problem.

There are traffic lights at the intersection of South and Main Streets. The intersection of South Street and Salem Road have stop signs at the North and South parts of the intersection. Why not on the East and West ones also. To make it a four way stop intersection. There is the yellow proceed with caution lights hanging in the intersection. I don't recall seeing them flashing lately. Most people disregard them anyhow. For any of you grammar critics, if I have made any grammatical or punctuation errors please do not post any comments. I promise I will no longer comment on how anyone posts.

Whoops, Tony D you are so correct! I was thinking about South & Salem and hadn't noticed that the Blog was on South & Main. When I made my comment I was talking about the intersection of South & Salem. This intersection is one that has seen more accidents then it should. Something should be done with this area. We don't want to see a fatality before they address it. I hope traffic control can come up with a solution to this problem intersection. I really don't see a big problem with South & Main. There is a traffic signal and if there is an accident it would be someone going through a red light, which could happen at any intersection with a traffic light.

"The intersection of SouthSt reet " Where is this? ...and what is a reet?
TONY D December 01, 2013 at 09:04 PM
Walter. I have read the blog and comments a few times. What are you talking about?
Mary December 02, 2013 at 01:12 PM
Tony D, I thought the same thing about his posting. What is he trying to say??
Mark December 02, 2013 at 07:57 PM
The Town should apply for the safe routes to school grant. They can get signals. sidewalks, crosswalks and other improvements funded by the Federal Government.
Mary December 02, 2013 at 08:28 PM
Mark, if there are grants out there for what you say there are then the Town should definitely apply for them. We really could use these upgrades here. Thanks for suggesting it!
TONY D December 02, 2013 at 09:08 PM
Mark, that is a good suggestion. Shouldn't someone in our Town Government be on top of what is available for grants. With the help of our State Senators and Representatives.

The most dangerous intersections in town are the caswell parking lot and main and motel 6 and main. You could pick up AIDS at either one.

How many more accidents will it take before South and Salem is a four way stop?????? It is long overdue and pretty much a shame that this serious issue has not been addressed. Can one of our elected officials chime in here and explain to us why one of the worst intersections in town is allowed to remain so unsafe?
Bob Kelley December 04, 2013 at 10:21 AM
It seems that The only time our elected officials post a comment or take a position on an issue is at election time Selectmen Sears, Wilson and Gay need to make this a priority for getting fixed ASAP
Mary December 04, 2013 at 11:35 AM
I absolutely agree that our Selectman, who I know are regular viewers of the Tewksbury Patch, should address this dangerous intersection at Salem Street & South Street. Most people cringe when they have to get across it, especially during rush hour. It is coming to election time so let's pray that one of them sees our postings!

My recollection is that South and Salem was indeed made a 4-way stop for a brief period of time years back and it ended up causing more accidents than previously. People who had been using Salem Road for years would just drive right through the intersection without noticing the new stop signs posted on Salem Road.
TONY D December 05, 2013 at 09:54 AM
Then TPD should have posted a cruiser at the intersection to enforce the stop signs. Removing them doesn't make any sense. That would be like putting a stop sign at any intersection and having it ignored.

I've lived near that intersection my whole life and trust me when I say that nothing will ever be done about it. Especially considering that South Street fire station, which is right at the corner, is always on the top of the chopping block when ever there are budget issues. With that being said, if they cared about how dangerous the intersection was why would they keep trying to take away the closest first responders.
Scott Wilson December 06, 2013 at 03:16 PM
I would agree that this is an area of concern. There are many opportunities to make this a better community and we tackle as many as we can. I would encourage when a concern like this comes up that you call the Town Managers office and get it on his radar. As for our focus on this particular issue, at my meeting next week with the DOT we will discuss this with them. The State has been made aware that this is an area of concern and that we need help to get it fixed. As for grants, we apply daily for them. Police, Fire, Schools, DPW...you name it, we get them.
Mary December 06, 2013 at 04:22 PM
Anything that the BOS can do about this situation would be very much appreciated. Thank you Mr. Wilson.
TONY D December 06, 2013 at 05:27 PM
"As for grants, we apply daily for them. Police, Fire, Schools, DPW...you name it, we get them." Is there an actual list of grants that the Town has applied for and what the results of the filings were?
Donna Marie Robitaille January 04, 2014 at 09:18 AM
We do apply for grants yet there are too many times we do not go after what can be ours. Hopefully the town manager will stop doing business as the former manager had. Not using the thought process of our unique efforts to improve water sewer as points to force the state to produce whats due to our community. For instance..we could have got a grant for water conservation if the town choose to fight for whats right. The guidelines give stars for those communities with water conservation methods. Although we dont have those stare We should have a gold medal for what we have accomplished with our sewer plan..We should get a grant if it isnt too late to help pay costs of water meters instead of taking residents that have already given too much.I would be happy to explain how, if there is any leadership willing to go forward for such grant. As a former member of the Conservation Commission, I have experience to know some of the ways the state DEP functions. I am certain that an expert in grants at the DEP could help. Townhall office was given this info at the time and choose not to take the possibility seriously. A specialist in water conservation at the DEP could also be of great help to work with the grant expert to get tewksbury what we deserve. The point is that we must have leadership that will open the door for us to ask for it all from a town that has earned it.

And until this community starts to understand that we are at a disadvantage by not setting new rules for future commercial development to Tewksbury, we will continue to be unable to do any improvements for a safe commute throughout town. The Salem South intersection is a prime example. Something must be done THIS YEAR> I suggest we come up with a new set of rules for those wishing to set up shop here. Then we can pay police details for all those DANGEROUS intersections and keep our First Responders in place at South St Station. TAXES ARE NOT AN EVEN DEAL ANYLONGER. Developers of commercial property should have to give more. Otherwise, this community should consider a moratorium on building!
