TGBL Results for Week 2

TGBL PUBLICITY WEEK 2  DECEMBER 8, 2012

JUNIOR LEAGUE

MERCURY 10  COMETS 8

The Mercury had a great team effort to come away with their first win of the season. Excellent passing by Kayla Fisk, Kristina Johnson and Kaitlin Oates helped move the offense with great hustle by Olivia Delonais as the high scorer. Asha Speller and Angelina Carew hustled on both ends of the court and contributed to the Mercury points. Our defense was led by Sarah Milne who had help from Hannah Keane and Amber Kelly. Molly O'Neill led the Mercury with both defensive and offensive rebounds. Great teamwork and communication led the Mercury to victory.

STORM 12 MONARCHS 8

The Storm and Monarchs played an exciting game and it came down to overtime where the Storm came through and took away their first win of the season by winning 12-8.  This win reflected a true team effort for the Storm with great defensive and offensive play by all.  The offense was lead by Mikayla Dec, Heather McLaughlin, Mikaela Enax, Brianna Iandoli, Rachel Lemus and Maddy Robillard.  They all did a great job moving the ball round and taking good shots.  The defense was lead by Sydney Crowley, Lexi Polimeno, Erin Sands, Maddy Pierce and Hailey Poirier where they played aggressively and hustled on defense the entire game grabbing key rebounds when it counted.   In overtime Mikaela Enax scored the winning baskets with some great shots.  A great game by both teams! 

LIBERTY 26 MYSTICS 12

The Liberty pulled off a great win against the tough Mystics.  They were able to take an early lead and great defense was the key to this win.  Leah Veloz had a great game both offensively, as leading scorer with 12 points, and defensively, as she worked hard to keep the Mystics post players from scoring. Ava Nickerson, Faith Mazzipica, Caitlyn Fiore and Amanda Moreira also contributed to the scoring for the Liberty.  Defensively, Rebecca DeFrancesco, Caitlyn Fiore, Ava Nickerson and Faith Mazzipica did a great job pressuring the Mystic ball handlers and created many key turnovers that led to points for the Liberty.  Tori Sweeney and Jamie Odams continue to improve and worked hard on defense to help maintain the solid Liberty lead.  Great team effort, Liberty.

The Mystics ran into a very strong Liberty team that has lots of talent and lost the game. The Mystics fell behind early on and were never able to catch up. We will work hard this week to improve and be ready to go next Saturday against our next opponent, the Comets.

ROCKERS 20 SPARKS 4

 The Sparks had a tough 2nd week as they lost to the Rockers. Alyssa Boudreau, Allie Indingaro, Emma Fleming, and Katherine Marquis rotated through the guard positions throughout the game.  They were all met with a challenging defense from the Rockers challenging them on the dribbling front.  Nicole Stephens and Rachel Straingie continued to be a presence under the basket grabbing any loose ball that came their way.  Emily Carlin and Julia Cafferty rotated through the center position and grabbed several rebounds.  Julia returned to action after several weeks of recovering from a sprained foot.  The third quarter saw Alexa Harrington score 4 points for the Sparks 'sparking' a little run before the Rockers matched the baskets.  Sarah Molander is almost ready to return to action and expect to see Surabhi Keesara rejoin this coming weekend.  I was proud of how the Sparks handled themselves throughout this tough game.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

TERRIERS 23  COUGARS 12

The Terriers had their second game this week against the Cougars looking for their first win, coming off a tough loss in the season opener last week.  Terriers came out strong at the start of the game having a lot of quality shot attempts, but just couldn’t get the bounce scoring just two points in the first quarter.  Guards Jessica Potito, Alexis Hillis and forward Brooke Fullerton pressured the Cougars making it tough for them to get much going on offense.  Abby Naugler & Sam Ogden were unstoppable under the net grabbing rebounds.  Fresh legs came out in the second quarter that’s when the Terriers offense of Jocelyn Stavros, Emily Langone & Taylor Bellavia came alive being aggressive & scoring another nine points in the quarter.  Terrier’s defense held the Cougars to only two points in the half. The Terriers came out in the second half right where they left off.  Great hustle & ball movement on the court led to another twelve points in the half with Sam Ogden scoring six points, Abby Naugler, Jessica Potito, & Emily Milne also contributing baskets.  Strong defense & steady offense proved to be the factor in the game for the Terriers.

The Cougars player a rough game against a very hungry Terriers team and lost. The Cougars played great defense early on but couldn't get many shots to drop. In the fourth quarter the Cougars started to hit some baskets but it was too little too late. We will turn the page and focus on our next opponent now.

WAVES 28 JAYHAWKS 15

Looking to make it 2 in a row, the Waves had to play a tough Jayhawks team.  Pressing defense on both ends of the court was the theme in the first half.  Biance Bongiorno played the whole first half and worked hard bringing the ball up the floor at the point and distributed with confidence.  Hannah Maffeo scored 3 buckets in a row from the left side kissing each off the backboard.  We went into the half tied 8-8.  The 3rd quarter was a total team effort as they outscored the Jayhawks 18-0 and took a big lead.  Leading the way was the pressing defense of Haley Mignon who scored 12 pts, 4 steals, 2 rebs and 1 assist.  Emily Woods 6 pts, Daisha Thompson 3 rebs, 1 asst, Bianca Bongiorna 2 pts ,2 assts, 3 rebs,  Krista Davis 5 big rebounds, Rachel Figucia 3 rebs and 3 steals, Sophia Alfano 2 asst and 2 rebs,  Hannah Maffeo 6 pts,  Samira El Hakim 1 asst 2 rebs, Sofia El Hakim 2 pts 2 rebs.  Defense wins Championships...

The Jayhawks played an intense game against the Waves and though the end result wasn't in our favor, there was a lot to be proud of!.  Leading the offense for the Jayhawks was Michaela Svendsen(11), Amber Buttaro(2) and Britney Bourassa(2).  Brandy Geldart and Janine Richardson both gave 100% on defense trying the keep the Waves offense at bay.  Guards Emily Chmela,Victoria Horton and Britney Bourassa played a fast paced game with good ball movement from the top of the key.  Amber Buttaro &  Amber Cullinan both were super aggressive of defense chasing every loose ball that came their way.  Under the net, Caitlin Panessiti and Michaela Svendsen grabbed multiple rebounds and blocked shot after shot made by the opponent.  Defensive player of the game goes to Sofia Gouveia.  There was not stopping her defense as she kept constant pressure on the ball throughout the game and turned one of her steals into a great drive to net

EAGLES 20  WILDCATS 17

The Wildcats lost a close game to a strong Eagles team. The day started off bright for the Wildcats as they came out with lots of defensive energy and were able to build a 10-0 lead after one. Steals from Ally Couillard , Stephanie Lemus, and Sarah Bishop led the transition offense. Couillard scored 4 points (6 total) in the quarter and made nice passes to Elizabeth Lam (4 points) and Lemus (4 points) who filled the lanes perfectly on the break. In the 2nd quarter the Eagles clawed their way back into the game and closed the gap to 10-6 at halftime despite great defense by Clarissa Chisholm and Kendall Donahoe. In the 2nd half the Eagles were able to tie the game leading to a back-and-forth affair that was anybody’s game until late when the Eagles scored to take a three point lead to tame the Wildcats. Chisholm had an at the buzzer three attempt that just fell short. Also scoring for the Wildcats were Kerry Shea with 2 and Chisholm with 1 point. Emily Puccia was active on both ends of the court getting a quality shot in the 1st half. Rebounding leaders were Donahoe with 5 and Katelyn Scorano with 4. Donahoe added 4 blocks on the day.

HUSKIES 15 WOLVERINES 9

The Huskies won their second game of the season against the Wolverines by a score of 15 to 9. The first half was  where most of the offense occurred and was a  battle back and forth. The Huskies lead 13 to 6 at half time. Leading the way in scoring were forwards Lizzie Gallella, Erin Gallella and Hannah Knoops. The second half became a defensive show with Faith Rocco and Shannon Farias taking control of the game stopping the Wolverines and making several key steals. Samantha LaLonde covered the middle very well and chipped in 2 points for the Huskies only points of the second half. It was a great team win. The Huskies will take on the Waves in week 3.

SENIOR LEAGUE

MAGIC 24  BLAZERS 17
The Magic came ready to play on Week 2 against a talented Blazers team.  From the opening tip, where Julia Noone won the tip to Tayla Spezzano who got the assist on a smart lead pass to Rachel Langone for the easy lay-up, the first few minutes of Quarter 1 was all Magic.  The Magic played great defense, stifling the Blazers guards who couldn't connect with the bigs underneath.  The Magic took the turnovers and drove to the hoop and displayed some great outside shooting, capped off by Meg Braciska hitting her first three pointer of the season to jump out to an early 10 point lead. The Magic were missing two players, and Julia Noone, Tayla Spezzano, and Irene Houde stepped up big, playing extra quarters to fill the void.  Nicole Petherbridge was again the defensive leader and captain on the floor.  The offense was led by Rachel Langone and Erika Whynot with 6 pts apiece, followed right behind by Meg Braciska with 5, Tayla Spezzano with 3, and Sam Alman and Irene Houde with 2 pts.  Great team win, and a strong start to the season!

The Blazers fell to an opportunistic Magic team. The perimeter offense and defense of the Magic was efficient and the Blazers saw themselves down 10-1 after one. Rebounding was good in the 1st with every player getting at least one and overall team rebounds increased compared to Week 1. The Magic built their lead in the 2nd as the Blazer offense could not get things going besides Kacie Ellegood who had 4 points (6 total), 3 rebounds and 2 steals. The 2nd half was a different story for the fired-up Blazers as they played aggressive defense and better offense to try to rally the team. They were able to close the gap to only a couple of baskets in the 4th quarter but could not complete the effort. Also scoring for the Blazers were Emily Velozo with 7, and Shauna Danehy and Maddy Wescott with 2 each. Leading rebounders were Teagan Trant with 7 and Wescott with 6. Wescott, Velozo, and Trant also led the team in steals.

SUN 38 PACERS 17 

The Sun  won their second game to start the season 38 to 17. Katie Garcia led the scoring with 12pts, followed by Samantha Surowiec 6pts, Mary Crowe, Karolyn Gallela, and Christina Noyes 4pts, Sarah Murray and Rebecca Lewis with 2pts a piece. Miranda Hulme once again led the way on the boards, with Amanda Lobsien, Olivia Powers, and Emily Burns playing outstanding Defense. Every Pacer player should hold their heads high. Every girl played extremely hard for the entire game even though they were short a lot of players. Great job girls.
