TGBL Results for Week One of the Season

JUNIOR LEAGUE

LIBERTY 20 STORM 18

The Liberty and Storm played an exciting first game of the season, and it came down to the wire, as the Liberty trailed the quick, aggressive Storm team through 3 quarters.  The win was a team effort for the Liberty, with some good hustle on defense by the whole team, especially in the 4th quarter.  Scoring for the Liberty were Rebecca DeFrancesco, Leah Veloz , Caitlyn Fiore and Ava Nickerson, who made 2 huge free thows in the 4th quarter to help seal the win.  Tory Sweeney contributed with some key rebounds, and some good hustle on defense.  Rena Ruggiero and Faith Mazzipica pressured the ball well, especially in the second half, and Jamie Odams and Amanda Moreira played good defense and helped create some key turnovers.  A great first game for both teams!

Opening day proved to be a great start to the season for Team Storm.  Although the team came up short and lost to Team Liberty 20-18 it was a hard fought  game.  Both teams played great.  This was the first opportunity that the Storm played in the regular season and they pulled together and showed great teamwork.   Great offensive play by Mikayla Dec, Alexis Polimeno, Brianna Iandoli,  Syndney Crowley and Madison Robillard and great defensive play by Hailey Poirier, Rachel Lemus, Micaela Enax and Erin Sands.     A great game for both teams as they start their season!

COMETS 11 SPARKS 9

In a very exciting season opener for both teams, the Comets narrowly defeated a strong Sparks team in a thrilling overtime duel.  The Comets offense was well spread through the squad with scoring from Madison Bourassa (4), Morgan Woodman (3), and Kiley Tibbetts (2), with assists from Alyssa Marchelletta, Shannon Crowley, and Megan Cunningham.  Terrific defense by the entire team and strengthened by the efforts of Megan Boudreau, Alex Fowler, and Brooke Woodman, allowed only 1 point after the first period.  With less than 1 minute to go in OT, Meghan Ostertag sealed the deal with a great short range jump shot to complete the victory.

The Sparks came out strong with 6 quick points from Katherine Marquis (4) and Alexa Harrington (2). Allie Indingaro and Alyssa Boudreau served us well in the guard positions securing the top of the key throughout the game. Nicole Stephens and Rachel Straingie played strong down low grabbing some key rebounds to keep the ball alive on offense.  Surabhi Keesara was solid in the center position grabbing several rebounds and blocking a couple of close range shots.  The Sparks played strong the entire game and started the fourth quarter down 9-6.  Katherine went on to score on a free throw and Alexa added two more points to tie the game 9-9 with a couple of minutes left in the game.  The game ultimately went into overtime but unfortunately the Sparks fell a short losing 11-9.  The Sparks should be extremely proud of the way they played the game.  Emma Fleming, Julia Cafferty, Sarah Molander, and Emily Carlin were unable to play in the game but we are very much looking forward to their quick return.

MYSTICS 16  MERCURY 7
The Mystics got the season off on the right foot with a strong win against a tough Mercury team.  The defense was the key to this victory and we are pleased so far but also realize we have to get a lot better.  The young kids played very well in their first game in the big league and are starting to get their assignments very well.  Our veterans set the tone early and it gave the younger players some confidence when it was their turn.  We now turn the page and look forward to our next game against the powerful Liberty who are coming off a big win.  This will be a big early season test for us but we look forward to the challenge and will be ready for them.

INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

WILDCATS 22 JAYHAWKS 8

The Wildcats started off the season with a solid effort from start to finish. Playing tough defense from the tip was the key to the teams success. Rebounds (Isabella Deroche – 7, Elizabeth Lam – 6, Kendall Donahoe – 5, and Ally Couillard and Kerry Shea each with 4) limited the Jayhawks 2nd chances. In the 1st quarter the defensive tone was set early behind 7 team steals (4 by Marissa Ladderbush) and ended with the Wildcats clinging to a 4-2 lead. Then in the 2nd quarter Sarah Bishop sparked the offense scoring three baskets to build the lead. In the 2nd half the squad continued to widen the lead slowly but surely to get to the final tally. Emily Puccia played tenacious defense and Stephanie Lemus, finding open space all day, was able to launch two quality shots. Teamwork and good decision-making were the main reasons for the victory. Scoring for the Wildcats besides Bishop were Deroche and Ladderbush with 4 each, and Donahoe, Shea, Clarissa Chisholm, and Katelyn Scorano all with 2 each. Assists came from Ladderbush and Donahoe with 2 and Lam and Shea with 1. Donahoe had 3 blocks to lead the team.

The Jayhawks opened their season against a tough Wildcats team, who held us to only 8 points, but the score didn't reflect the girls efforts! Our offense wes led by  Britney Bourassa(4), Emily Chmela(2) and Amber Cullinane(2) putting Jayhawks on the board.  Caitlin Panessiti, Brandey Geldart and Janine Richardson were strong under the net with rebounds and blocks.  Amber Buttaro, Victoria Horton and Sofia Gouveia did a great job moving the ball on offense and stopping passes made by the Wildcats.  Defensive player of the game goes to Jessica Caredeo. She was a tough force at the top of the key with multiple steals on both ends of the court and did it with great finesse!

 EAGLES 21 COUGARS 20

The TGBL Intermediate League Eagles opened their season with a win, in a very competitive game against a very spirited Cougars team.  Both teams played very well, in a game that went right to the wire, with the Eagles coming out on top in a true team effort.  The Eagles were paced through the scoring of Isabelle Picher, (8 points), Sarah Constantino, (4 points, 2 rebounds) and Briana Walker, (4 points).  Also making a tremendous impact were key baskets and pivotal free throws made by Kaylee Leon, (3 points and 1 rebound).  Rounding out the effort was some tenacious defense of Kalya Giaimo, (2 rebounds and 2 jump balls) and strong rebounding of Lauren McIntyre, (2 rebounds and 2 points).

The Cougars started the season off strong against the Eagles team.  We have lots of new players on this team and they are all working very hard to learn and improve every week. As this game went along the Cougars started to really settle down and started to play with more confidence.  We will take that and look forward to next weeks game against the Terriors.  This will be a big early season test for us but we will be ready.

HUSKIES 26 TERRIERS 23

 Opening day for the Terriers started this past Saturday where they played the Huskies at TMHS.  The game started out pretty evenly matched with offense led by Jocelyn Stavros & Emily Langone. Great rebounding from centers Abby Naugler & Amanda Clarke, also forwards Samantha Ogden, Emily Milne & Taylor Bellavia. In the second half the Terriers went down a few buckets. With strong defense by Jessica Potito, Alexis Hillis, Alyssa Oullette & Brooke Fullerton came back with a chance to tie at the end, rimming out a three point shot at the buzzer… Terriers go down 26 – 23 in the season opener.

WAVES 19 WOLVERINES 15
The Waves opened the season against a tough Wolverines team.  Heading into the season with a defense first mentality.  The girls didn't disappoint.  The first half was a great sign of their total team effort.  Leading the way on offense was Haley Mignon, with 10 pts.  Bianca Bongiorno had 3 pts.  Hannah Maffeo with 4 points and Daisha Thompson with 2 pts. Emily Woods played great D and had some nice drives to the net.  Grace Morris was solid at the 2.  Rachel Figucia was rock solid on D, swarming over her opponents.  Krista Davis had 3 impressive blocks and played well on both sides of the ball.  Samira El Hakim had some nice looks on offense.  Sofia El Hakim showed impressive dribbling skills.  Sophia Alfano used her height grabbing some nice rebounds.  All 11 girls contributed in a big way and they all won my player of the game award for week 1.  11 girls = 1 AWESOME TEAM.

SENIOR LEAGUE

MAGIC 20 SPURS 18

Week 1 opened up with a fun, evenly matched game against the Spurs. Both teams came out looking a bit rusty or maybe it was too much Thanksgiving turkey, and scoring was hard to come by. In the second quarter the Magic came away with some steals to get some points on the board. Both teams were running the court hard, and playing some good defense. Irene Houde, Allie Bourassa, Niamh Cote and Nicole Petherbridge led the defense with some great play. The Magic offense was well spread out with 6 players scoring!  Way to get everyone involved girls!  The Magic was able to squeak out a 2 point win against a strong Spurs team.
In the season opener in which the Spurs suffered a heart breaking 2 point loss it was the Spurs defense which kept us in the game right up to the last few seconds.  The defense was led by our guards (Ashley Colarusso (2pts), Alyssa Mercurio (2pts), Kendyl Spinelli & Michelle Tenaglia (2pts)) who applied pressure all day long to the Magic guards as they moved the ball into our defensive zone.  Offensively we moved the ball well and set up many open shots led by Gina Puccia, Katy Dunleavy (2pts), Carla Tenaglia and Erika Deveau but we seemed to be snake bitten as the ball just wouldn't drop our way.  Victoria Mirabito (6pts) and Ashley Figucia (4pts) played excellent on offense and they are our co-offensive players of the game and our defensive player of the game is Katy Dunleavy as she managed to control the defensive boards for us all day long.

BLAZERS 41 WIZARDS 21

The Blazers started off the season with a solid effort from start to finish. Playing tough defense from the tip was the key to the teams’ success. The Blazers played smothering defense in the 1st quarter behind 4 steals from Madison Wescott and 3 from Teagan Trant and they were able to build a 19-0 lead at the end of one. The 2nd quarter was similar to the 1st and the team was able to build their lead to 27-5. Most impressive for the half was the anticipation of where the ball was going to be that allowed the Blazers to get steals and rebounds. In the 2nd half the Blazers played great half-court offense and defense resulting in the final tally. Good teamwork and decision-making were evident and every player on the team had at least one rebound led by Baxter with 9 and Caitlin Carroll with 7. Sarah Sullivan kept up her defensive effort to the end and launched the only 3-point attempt of the day, which just missed. Shauna Danehy denied open space on defense and found it on offense. Scoring on the day were Wescott – 15, Emily Velozo – 10, Kacie Ellegood and Carroll with 6 each, and Arianna Nicosia and Taylor Donahoe with 2. Leading in steals were Wescott with 5 and Trant and Ellegood with 4 each. Wescott led the team with 3 assists. Donahoe added 5 blocks on the day to lead the team.

PACERS 31 SONICS 15

Great game Saturday between the Pacers and Sonic.  With a 10-2 deficit, the Pacers were in trouble early.  Although the shots were being fired and the rebounds were being made, the Pacers had a hard time getting the points and holding onto the ball.  After a mid-second quarter pow wow, the Pacers switched gears.  With Delaney Chisholm, Heather Doyle, and Chelsea Pelligrino setting a nearly unbreakable press and Danielle Carrigg/Rachel Kelly, and Erin Davis picking up in the front court, the Pacers began to come back.  Third quarter play continued with Nicole Cobuccio, Julia Kelly, and Kaylie McElravy continuing with huge D in the back court and Laina Angelis and Lauren Riccardi playing hard underneath, the team was on their way to a victory.  Player of the game, Delaney Chisholm with 14pts, Heather Doyle 6pts, Kaylie McElravy 4, Julia Kelly 4, Erin Davis and Lauren Riccardi each had  2.  Excellent rebounding by Erin Davis and Lauren Riccardi.  Top notch D to the team for their 2nd half play!

The Sonics had a tough lost against the Pacers on Saturday. The Sonics had a clear ten to two lead at the end of the first quarter. Throughout the game, the points battled on the board back and fourth. In the third quarter the Pacers put on a pulsating press that defeated the Sonics. In the end ,the Pacers took an impressive sixteen point lead closing out the game. Sonic players that contributed to the score were Haley Pozzuto, Magan Timmins, Natalie Veloz and Sarah Ward. The final score was 31 to 15 Pacers.

SUNS 33 JAZZ 19

The Suns won there 1st game of the year 33-19 over the Jazz. Karalyn Gallella led the scoring with 13pts, followed by Katie Garcia 8pts,  Mary Crowe, Amanda Lobsien, Samantha Surowiec all with 4pts. The team played great defense led by the all around play of Sarah Murray and the rebounding of Miranda Hulme and Olivia Powers. It took a total team effort to defeat a very good Jazz team.
