Car Break-in Thwarted, Rabid Raccoon Reported

Awoken by his neighbor's car alarm, a Rogers Street resident was able to help police nab an alleged burglar.

The resident was woken up just before 2 a.m. on Friday, July 29, looked out his window and saw a man running from the scene, according to police. Officers responded to the scene and, after a brief search, found the suspect emerging from a backyard.

Johnmark Wachaga, 17, 51 1/2 Huntington St., Lowell, was charged with breaking and entering into a vehicle in the nighttime with the intent to commit a felony and attempting to commit a crime.

Residents report rabid raccoon (July 30)

On Saturday, around 3 p.m., police received multiple calls regarding a possibly rabid raccoon on Dewey Street. An officer responded to the scene and ultimately found the animal behind a home in the area around a swimming pool. The officer reported that the animal did not appear to be injured or ill and ultimately it went on its way.

Suspicious activity at the DAV (Aug. 1)

received a call from a worker at the DAV Hall, 180 Pond St., on Monday morning, just after 3 a.m. The worker reported that she had been cleaning when a suspicious man came up the stairs with keys in his hand. She said she asked him what he was doing there and he said he had never been inside the hall before and wanted to see what it looked like.

The man then left the hall and the worker noted that he took off in a black Monte Carlo with two females. Officers responded to the scene but were unable to locate the man or the vehicle.

Raccoon status check leads to warrant arrest (July 29)

On Friday, police received a call around 12:30 p.m. regarding a raccoon trapped in a Dumpster at Tewksbury Auto Repair on Livingston St. While responding to that call, an officer encountered multiple individuals with outstanding warrants. Additional officers were sent to the scene. According to the police report, Joseph Sperry, 23, 30 Sycamore Road, Lowell, was arrested on five outstanding warrants.

The officer also reported that the raccoon was fine and should be able to get out of the dumpster on his own.

Arrest:

Kelly Ann BelleRose, 42, 1317 Pawtucket Blvd., Unit 14, was arrested after a motor vehicle stop at 3:05 a.m. on Saturday, July 30. She was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and not having her registration in her possession.

Other Calls:

On Sunday, July 31, at 12:22 a.m., there was a single-car accident in front of Crystal News on Main Street. The driver was transported to Saints Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

On Sunday, July 31, just after 1:30 a.m., police received multiple 911 calls related to a fight in front of 27 Young St. Officers broke up the disturbance. The provided courtesy transportation for one person and took another person into protective custody.
