Lowell Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Motel Caswell Incident

Police allegedly witnessed Nicholas Chappell attempting to strangle a woman after throwing a rock through the motel window to gain access.

A Lowell man faces multiple charges includes attempted murder after Tewksbury Police tased him upon finding the man allegedly assaulted a man and attempted to strangle his wife.

Police said that at about 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, officers were called to Motel Caswell for a report of a domestic disturbance, malicious damage to property and assault and battery.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a man who was bleeding from the face. The man told responding officers that he and a female friend were inside a rented room when the friend's husband threw a rock through the window.

After the rock shattered the window, the man allegedly gained access to the room and physically assaulted the second man, who fled the room.

While police approached the room, they noticed glass on the sidewalk. Officers then allegedly saw a man on top of a woman on the bed with his forearm against her neck.

Believing the man was attempting to strangle the victim, the officer fired his taser. The taser struck the man in the back and caused him to release the woman, police said.

Following the incident, police arrested Nicholas Chappell, 45, whose last known address is 94 Rock Street, Lowell.

Chappell was charged with attempted murder, domestic assault and battery, assault and battery, breaking and entering in the nighttime for a felony, and malicious destruction of property over $250.
