Tewksbury Resident Gets Wrapped Up in American Flag On Zakim Bridge

The flag fell from atop the bridge into the southbound lane of Interstate 93.

One commuter got a face full of America during Friday's morning commute into Boston

While driving on Interstate 93, a Tewksbury resident was wrapped in a gigantic American flag that fell onto his car from atop the Zakim Bridge Friday at 10:30 a.m., according to a report from the Lowell Sun.

According to multiple reports, Val Demchev, 55, of Tewksbury, was on his way to work Friday when the 30-by-40 foot American flag hung on the bridge for the Fourth of July fell and covered his windshield.

"The large flag that flies over the Zakim apparently fell onto a vehicle in the southbound lane, causing the motorist to spin out and strike the median," according to a report from Massachusetts State Police.

Demchev, an immigrant from Russia, tried to maintain control of his vehicle, but crashed into the median after avoiding other cars near him on Interstate 93, according to multiple reports.

Demchev was not injured in the crash, according to the Sun.

State officials stated a frayed rope caused the flag to fall, and that protocol for attaching flags to the Zakim Bridge will be reviewed, according to the Sun.
