Selectmen's Notebook: Public Safety Grant, VFW Complaint

Bits and pieces of business from the Selectmen's meeting of Dec. 6

The chairman of the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen has asked two board members to meet with representatives of the __ and a local family to see if a neighborhood dispute can be resolved.

Todd Johnson asked Selectmen Doug Seas and David Gay to serve on a subcommittee, specifically charged with attempting to resolve concerns raised by Bonnie and Marty Spiegal, whose home is located near the VFW building on Vernon Street.

At the selectmen's Dec. 6 meeting, Johnson read from a letter of complaint submitted by the Spiegals, asking for an opportunity discus concerns about noise from the club and its hours of operation. Johnson said he wanted to see if bringing the parties together would result in an amicable resolution. If not, Johnson asked Gay and Sears to inform the parties of everything involved in the process of opening a formal public hearing.

In other business:

  • __ said he had been informed by Police Chief Timothy Sheehan that the department had been awarded a $5,000 grant to be used toward enhanced traffic enforcement.
  • The Board approved a lengthy list of business license renewals, with the caveat that water and sewer fees and property tax bills must be up to date to the satisfaction of town officials.
  • Johnson announced that the had not asked for their liquor license to be renewed. The business recently closed permanently.
  • Montuori announced the creation of the new position of assistant DPW superintendent. He said had been the only department head without an assistant.
  • Montuori said he would begin advertising the position of Chief Assessor shortly. Jay Kelley will be retiring from the position next month.
  • Selectwoman Anne-Marie Stronach announced that there are still openings to be filled on the school facilities committee and invited interested residents to apply.
