Selectmen Vote to Shift Sewer Debt to Residents

The Lowell Sun reported that the tax levy shift will result in an increase of about $47 for the average taxpayer.

The average tax bill for Tewksbury residents is on the rise.

During a March meeting, the Tewksbury Board of Selectmen said they had to decide whether they would pay for a loss in revenue through the sewer rate or if they would ask residents to pay for it through the tax rate.

Earlier this week, the board opted to move $640,000 from the sewer enterprise fund to the property tax levy, according to a report in the Lowell Sun.

If there had been no shift to the property tax, sewer users would have seen an increased bill of $56.06 per average user, according to the Lowell Sun report.

Instead, the newspaper reported that the average tax payer will now see an increase of about $47 on their tax bill after the tax rate increases from $16.11 per $1,000 to $16.26 per $1,000 as a result of the sewer change.
