Senate Aces Proposal to Make Volleyball Official Sport of Massachusetts

By a unanimous decision, the Senate agreed to make volleyball the state's official recreational and team sport.

Massachusetts is the birthplace of basketball. But did you know the state is responsible for the creation of another sport as well?

Volleyball was created in Holyoke, and thanks to a unanimous vote on Tuesday by the Massachusetts Senate, it's now the official recreational and team sport of Massachusetts.

Invented in Holyoke, volleyball was discovered in 1895, not far from Springfield, considered the birthplace of basketball, which is already the official sport of Massachusetts.

MyFoxBoston.com reported that State Sen. Donald Humason sponsored the legislation, arguing that volleyball is the second most played sport in the world behind soccer.

Humason's colleagues appear to agree with his argument. The Senate approved the bill to make volleyball the state's official official recreational and team sport by a margin of 39-0, MassLive.com reported.

That decision moved the bill in front of the House of Representatives where, if approved, it would be sent before Gov. Deval Patrick to potentially become a law.

“Massachusetts should be proud to be the birthplace of two great American sports, volleyball and basketball, which also enjoy popularity and are played all over the world," said Humason, according to MassLive.com.

Do you agree with the decision to make volleyball the official recreational and team sport of Massachusetts? Or do you think the state needs just one official sport? Let us know in the comments section below.
