Library's Micky Ward Month Begins With Ward Visit on Saturday, June 2

The Tewksbury Public Library is hosting a month's worth of Micky Ward-inspired events as part of "Tewksbury Reads."

The Tewksbury Public Library has organized a month of events inspired by local boxing legend - Micky Ward.  The first two weeks of events are listed below.  All events are FREE and open to ALL.  Registration is strongly recommended.  Register by calling the library at 978-640-4490 or by clicking on the appropriate links below.

Saturday, June 2, 2pm: An Afternoon With Micky Ward (At Senior Center) 

Micky Ward will discuss his legendary career, answer questions from the audience, and sign copies of his brand new biography – A Warrior’s Heart: The True Story of Life Before and Beyond The Fighter. The Andover Bookstore will be present to sell copies of the book to all interested fans. This event will be held at the Tewksbury Senior Center.  Click HERE to register.

Monday, June 4, 7pm: Tewksbury Tough - Our Boxing History 

Boxing historian Christine Lewis will explore the history of boxing in the Merrimack Valley.  Christine will highlight Martin Flaherty’s Wamesit Health Farm, the center for boxing in Tewksbury in the early 1900’s.  Click HERE to register.

Tuesday, June 5, 7pm: A Tribute To The Golden Gloves

Local filmmaker Bridget Driscoll will discuss her NESN Documentary – “FIGHTERS: Road to the Golden Gloves.”  Bridget will share hundreds of exclusive photos and video clips of Lowell’s famous boxing tournament.  Click HERE to register.

Wednesday, June 6, 7pm: Irish Thunder Book Conversation 

Join library staff for a guided conversation of Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward by Bob Halloran.  Conversation packets – including discussion questions, a rating guide, and reviews of the book – will be provided at the start of the event.  Click HERE to register.

Thursday, June 7, 7pm: From Crack Street To Hollywood

Author Richard Farrell will discuss his memoir – What’s Left Of Us – which has just been optioned into a movie starring Channing Tatum.  Richard was a screenwriter for “The Fighter,” played himself in the film, and directed the documentary – “High On Crack Street.”  Richard will also take questions from the audience and sign copies of his book.  The Andover Bookstore will be present to sell copies of the book to all interested fans.  Click HERE to register.

Friday, June 8, 7pm: Dinner & A Movie - High On Crack Street

A free dinner will be served at 7pm followed by a guest speaker at 7:30pm.  At 8:15pm, the film “High On Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell” will be shown.  The 1995 documentary followed the lives of three drug addicts from Lowell, including Micky Ward’s brother Dicky Eklund.  Click HERE to register.

Monday, June 11, 7pm: Why Everyone Should Be A Boxing Fan 

Boston University Professor Carlo Rotella will discuss his love for boxing in his lecture, “Three Good Reasons To Write (And Read) About Boxing.”  Carlo is the author of the critically-acclaimed boxing books – Cut Time and Good With Their Hands.  Click HERE to register.

Tuesday, June 12, 7pm: The Evolution of Boxing: Then & Now 

Boxing writer Ted Sares will discuss Micky Ward’s place in history while examining different eras in boxing history, comparing “old school” boxing to “new school” boxing.  Ted is a member of the International Boxing Research Organization.  Click HERE to register.

Wednesday, June 13, 12pm: Irish Thunder Book Conversation

Christopher Klein will discuss his upcoming book – Strong Boy – the story of Boston’s brash, colorful Irish-American boxer John L. Sullivan, who became one of the country’s first ethnic heroes and first American sports superstar, all while battling his own demons of weight, women and alcohol.  Click HERE to register.

Friday, June 15, 7pm: Dinner & A Movie - The Fighter 

A free dinner will be served at 7pm followed by a guest speaker at 7:30pm.  At 8:15pm, the film “The Fighter” will be shown.  Based on a true story, two brothers, against all the odds, come together to train for a historic title bout that has the power to reunite their fractured family and give their hard-luck town what it’s been waiting for: pride.  Click HERE to register.
