Cambridge Savings Bank Provides Free Financial Education to Entire Senior Class at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School

Cambridge Savings Bank (CSB) has been providing free financial education lessons to more than 300 senior high school students at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School in Billerica.  Shawsheen Superintendent Charlie Lyons required every Shawsheen senior to participate in CSBsmart financial education lessons, which focus on topics such as budgeting and saving, checking account management, building credit, and fraud awareness, because many of his school’s students have already entered the workforce.

“Cambridge Savings Bank provides Shawsheen Valley Technical High School with an invaluable resource for providing vital financial education to our seniors, many who earn paychecks in their chosen trade,” said Superintendent Lyons. “Financial responsibility and success for teenagers begins with awareness, so programs like CSBsmart are essential toward achieving this important goal.”

“Cambridge Savings Bank is pleased to share critical financial knowledge with every senior at Shawsheen,” said Vice President and Financial Education Program Manager, Evan Diamond. “Financial education not only helps newly employed students effectively budget their earnings, it teaches them how to avoid becoming victims of fraud and making poor credit decisions that can lead to stressful, unmanageable debt.”

Cambridge Savings Bank first engaged Shawsheen seniors in CSBsmart lessons in the fall of 2012.  After seeing how well his students participated in and learned from the curriculum, Superintendent Lyons invited the Bank to educate the next senior class during the current 2013-14 school year. Pre- and post-session survey results demonstrated that the average Shawsheen student gained an understanding of five new key financial concepts.

CSBsmart lessons are presented during regular school hours. Utilizing interactive elements such as role playing and spirited class discussions, the four-lesson CSBsmart program makes money-management relevant by using examples from everyday life.
