The Self-Defense Institute was established in June 1999 by Shihan Jeff (Jeffrey Davis) and Shihan Deb (Debora Alley/Davis) after many years of training in the martial arts.
Today, we are still being recognized by national, regional, and local associations for exemplary teaching, leadership in the community and a commitment to Excellence!

The keys to our success are the fact that we are extremely humble individuals and that TSDI is built on integrity. (Afterall, it is well known that the integrity path is the only path upon which you will never get lost.)
After years of management positions in Corporate America, we opened The Self-Defense Institute in 1999 with the idea that there would be time for personal family responsibilities, as Shihan Deb’s parents needed more care. (The personal tests that we endured were our real challenges, as we lost Shihan Deb’s Grandfather (Arthur Moholland); Father (Paul D. Alley); Mother (Joyce Alley); and close Uncle (Edward Cooper) all within a few years of each other.)

Operating and owning this successful small business is a lot of work, time-consuming, and, in general, an intense learning experience every day since day one; but we say this with the utmost respect….as tired as we are day in and day out for helping/working with so many local families, ten million dollars wouldn’t change what we do. (ok...ten million, or even one million, would be welcome though) Remember, one hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car we drove, how much money was in our bank account (nothing there right now), how big our house was…but one hundred years from now, the world might be a better place because our teachings/friendships were important to a person/child/adult/student, who then took change and changed their world.
We’ve met so many wonderful families in the Tewksbury area over the last 15 years and that quality of time could never be replaced, traded or taken away. Many are still friends today even though their children have grown, are away at college or have just moved out of the area.
As masters in the art of Kempo Karate/Ju-Jitsu/Kung Fu, we know our students’ weaknesses, but show them their strengths; we recognize their limitations, but emphasize their possibilities. There is no greater reward than to make a fundamental difference in another one’s life.
As we look back at that positive, life-changing decision to open The Self-Defense Institute in June of 1999, we remember the factor that was really difficult, but also really amazing. It was giving up those Corporate America management positions that we loved so much and venturing into the unknown small business world to allow time for family. As Shihan Deb said, “No matter what you’ve done for yourself or for humanity, if you cannot look back on having cared and given attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished? Be life long or short, its completeness depends on what it was lived for.”
As time unfolded over these 15 years, we are proud and honored to be a part of this community, where we have been able to donate and contribute to many initiatives. The TSDI journey began with a single step and will continue with many more steps. 15 Years and Counting….
