Lady Redmen Slug, Pitch Past Newburyport in Softball Playoff Opener

With Friday's win, the Lady Redmen advanced to the quarterfinal round on Sunday.

The Tewksbury Memorial High School softball team opened its quest for a North Division 2 title on Friday night with a shutout victory over Newburyport in the first round.

Ace pitcher Shannon McLaughlin stymied the Clipper bats and Tewksbury received contributions from up and down the line up to secure a 6-0 victory.

Erin Walsh and Brooke Hardy each scored first inning runs while Anna Sessa added a two-run home run to push the lead to six runs.

Thanks to the victory, the No. 6 seeded Redmen advanced to take on No. 3 seed Arlington, which thumped No. 14 Bedford, 9-3, in their opening round tilt.

The quarterfinal contest between Tewksbury and Arlington is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. in Arlington.

If the locals can advance, they will face No. 2 Danvers or No. 7 Reading in the North Division 2 semifinal on Tuesday.
